Beirut-Gulag orkestar-Beirut is nineteen year old multi instrumentalist zach condon from albuquerque, the album features guest appearences from neutral milk hotels jeremy barnes and heather trost from a hawk and a hacksaw, the album comes across as a collection of archival eastern european folk songs with lots of mandolins, ukuleles and disjointed scratch brass sounds, condon adds his beautifully dramatic deep baritone voice over these sounds to make an album that sounds like a miniature trip around the world, a hugely enjoyable new take on the current sounds of acid folk and an album that will suck you in on first listen, highly recommended, now reissued on the 4ad label and features the bonus cd ep lon gisland which wasnt on the original ba da bing version, november 2006-Cd-4ad-€16.99

Bishop perry tillis-Too close-1972 gospel blues reissue, bishop perry tillis was born in 1919 in alabama and played his distinctive style of gospel led blues for many years, after disappering from music for many many years the swedish music archivist begnt olsson tracked him down in 1972 and recorded three sessions with him with just his acousitc and electric guitar, the sessions are wonderfully sparse and raw sounding like they could have been recorded anytime over the last century, november 2006-Cd-Birdman-€19.99

Cherrystones-Word and the sympathetic sounds of the psychedelic ghetto-Another excellent collection from cherrystones and follows on from the cherrystones rocks compilation, this one tends to concentrate on the psychedelic folk rock and prog rock moog sounds, the album features a total of 15 tracks ranging from the deviants in 1968 up the the dead moon from 1989, as the title suggest this new compilation concentrates on the edgy psychedelic rock sounds but their common theme is a real feeling of heavy funky basslines, the majority of artists i have to admit are very obscure but one listen and you will be hooked to this highly entertaining mix, features some fine liner notes so you can read up on the obscurities included, november 2006-Cd-Poptones-€16.99

Estel-The bones of something-Estel have been hinting at some really great things over the course of three previous albums but i have to say this new album has taken a giant step for them, they have truly honed their instrumental synth led sounds into something altogether original and highly entertaining, they take in some elements of the modern post rock sounds, some eighties keyboard led sounds and even some strange mutated version of a b movie horror soundtrack, the end result is one of the finest irish records of the year so far in my humble opinion and its always such a pleasure when something comes along and leaves me at odds to even try and describe on paper, there are lots of repetitive and explosive guitar led pieces slowly mutating into catchy synth chord progressions, the legendary mike watt of minutemen fame makes a sublime spoken word appearence on track four and after that all i can do is highly recommend you at least have a listen to this record as you will be very pleasantly surprised, the album is released on their own label little plastic tapes, november 2006-Cd-Little plastic tapes-€11.99

Glasvegas-Go square go-Scottish based outfit on the waks records label, limited to only 400 copies on 7 inch only, this is some of the craziest noise i have heard in ages, its sounds like a snotty punk rock jesus and mary chain playing fifties doo wop music and i have to say its a real blast of fresh air to my ears, it sounds like it was recorded on the most beat up mixing desk and then fed through a massive distortion effect, flip over to the b side and they have moved in a doo wop fifties rockabilly outfit with just as much fun, this band really sound like they are having great fun making music, describing it on paper doesnt really do it justice as you really have to hear this for yourselves, november 2006-7″-Waks records-€4.99

Johannsson, johann-Ibm 1401 users manual-This is a collection of classical music on 4ad like you have never heard before, icelandic composer johannson has merged the most lush classical string sounds with laptop glitchy electronic sounds, the album is probably the most beautifully strange records you are likely to hear all year, the real standout track for me features a monotone spoken word reading from what i guess is the users manual from the title of the album, the addition of the minimal glitchy sounds in the background simply add to what is already a pretty perfect album, you simply need to sit back and immerse yourself in this truly beautiful journey, comes in a card digipack sleeve, november 2006-Cd-4ad-€15.99

Klumpes, adrian-Be still-Solo album from the pianist with triosk on the leaf label, on this project klumpes takes piano pieces and treats and distorts them electronically so that what may have been simple piano compostions are taken in a different lush and serene direction, there have been some damn fine electronic albums this year but this one really stands apart, certainly for fans of max richter, deaf center and goldmund, october 2006-Cd-Leaf label-€17.99

Mogwai-Zidane-It really was only a matter of time before some film maker has the good sense to ask mogwai to score a soundtrack, what a marriage made in heaven this is too, you have a film about one of the greatest footballers of all time and one of the finest exponents of soundscape like instrumental music from the last ten years, the music is much more sedate than the usual mogwai stuff but then change is never a bad thing, the album is full of mellow scratching guitars, lots of piano and a real intimate sound right down to the inclusion of fingers scratching on guitar strings, everything moves at a beautifully slow pace with the barest brushed drums to accompany everything, november 2006-Cd-Pias-€15.99

Monotract-Xprmntl lvrs-New york based three piece originally hailing from miami on thurston moores ecstatic peace label, just one quick flick through this album and you will see why the sonic youth guitarist signed them to his new label, this is avant garde noise rock and at times at its most extreme, these guys have taken the early sonic youth no wave sound and mashed it into a blender along with the sounds of lightning bolt, the minimal messed up techno sounds of suicide and the dark no wave sounds of new york in the eighties, you end up with something sounding like aphex twin at his most extreme playing around with detuned guitars and finding a glitch in his drum machine making sure it cant play the same beat twice, fans of the likes of lightning bolt and early sonic youth during their lengthy rambling phase will absolutely adore this truly intrigueing listen, november 2006-Cd-Ecstatic peace-€16.99

Mv and ee with the bummer road-Green blues-The follow up to the mother of thousands album on time lag from earlier this year, mv and ee is the solo project featuring matt valentine and erika elder from the tower recordings and this is their first release on thurston moores label ecstatic peace, this is a really lovely collection of quite noisy psychedelic folk based sounds veering off into some hybrid of syd barrett jamming with early velvet underground, it all sounds really loose and improvised and you feel these guys could record these songs hundreds of times and never do the same version twice, its not quite as strange as it may sound on paper though as the album is rather beautiful and mellow at times and is a hugely enjoyable listen for all lovers of modern free folk, november 2006-Cd-Ecstatic peace-€16.99

My morning jacket-Okonokos-21 track live album from my morning jacket, the album was recorded live at the legendary filmore in san francisco, i have to say i am not a big fan of live albums so a double live album kinda scared me at first but it really does work for these guys, the first thing to blow me away was how amazingly soulful jim james vocals are live, his voice sounds truly stunning, the second thing to turn me on to this album was just how explosive and noisy these guys can be live compared to their studio recordings, the album is based in a warped rootsy american rock with layer upon layer of heavy guitars floating around over a truly heavy rhythm section, i have really grown to love this album as i had forgotten how bloody good this band are, november 2006-Cd-Ato records-€19.99

Roots tonic meets bill laswell-Roots tonic meets bill laswell-A new collaboration between the legendary producer and bass player bill laswell and matisyahus backing band, its not often that i get the use the words modern dub reggae and very very good in the same sentence but i have to admit i am loving this release at the moment, its full of modern digital dub sounds blended with some really high quality old style live sounds with josh werner on bass, aaron dugan on guitars and johan david on drums, laswell truly knows his way around a quality dub reggae mix and his studio skills are really in great form on this album, there are many moments on this album when you really do think you are listening to some long lost classic dub record from 20 years ago, the production is truly sublime and there is not too much of the modern synth sounds to ruin it, the great lee perry would be proud of this, november 2006-Lp-Roir-€13.99

Rose, ethan-Ceiling songs-Following a number of very limited releases on locust this is ethan roses first full album, the songs are inspired by textual sounds discovered in old things, rose combines player pianos, music boxes, brass and strings with electronics to give us a collection of three lovely drifting and evolving soundscapes, an extremely tranquil listen, october 2006-Cd-Locust-€16.99

Sailboats are white-Turbo-Canadian based outfit now signed to alan mcgees poptones label, this is far from the sounds you would expect from the poptones label, the basis for this outfit are heavily rooted in the noisy post punk and hardcore sounds of the eighties complete with their big black style pounding drum machine, the closest thing i can think to describe this outfit is to try and imagine big black merged with the early sounds of snotty english punk rock and the new york dolls, its blisteringly fast stuff and quite an original approach to merging all their influences, november 2006-Cd-Poptones-€16.99

Silver apples-The garden-The long lost third album from the silver apples finally sees the light of day after years of legal wrangling over the ownership of the tapes, this release has been an absolute labour of love from bully records to release, 16 brand new tracks of silver apples magic, for those of you who have never come across them silver apples were on of the pioneers of using electronics in rock music, october 2006-Cd-Bully-€17.99

Siouxsie and the banshees-The complete john peel sessions-Nineteen track collection featuring 5 complete peel sessions compiled on cd for the very first time, the collection goes right back to the very first session in 1977 before the band even had a record deal just to prove peel loved these guys before most people even knew who they were, features a really early version of hong kong garden from the 1978 session too, the full tracklisting is love in a void, mirage, metal postcard, suburban relapse, hong kong garden, overground, carcass, helter skelter, placebo effect, playground twist, regal zone, poppy day, halloween, voodoo dolly, but not them, into the light, candyman, cannons and lands end, november 2006-Cd-Island-€10.99

Spencer dickinson-The man who lives for love-A collaboration between jon spencer and north mississippi allstar members luther and cody dickinson, the album is a real sleazy trip through some dirty low down mississippi blues influeced sounds with heaps of slide guitars and low down hammond organ sounds, its not quite as abrasive as the blues explosion but it sure makes up for it with laid back bluesy sleaze, the album was recorded by the legendary jim dickinson in his zebra ranch studios in memphis and you can really hear the influence this had on the band, features a damn fine cover of junior kimbroughs track free aswell, absolutely superb old style mississippi blues rock, november 2006-Cd-Yep roc-€19.99

Spikes-In love no more-Dublin based rock outfit return with their 3 track ep, features in love no more, croatian lover and in love no more enhanced video, these lads have a great love for old style adrelelin driven classic rock sounds with a real raw live feel to it, the opening track sounds like a modern take on the rawkus sounds of early rolling stones with a real funky edge to it, november 2006-Cds-Own label-€2.99

Tall firs-Tall firs-Tall firs are a new york based three piece now signed to thurston moores ecstatic peace label, this is a lovely and rather mellow collection of post rock meeting free folk and folk rock, there are moments when the repetitive guitar phases remind me of the quiter parts of mogwai which then slowly blends into something akin to a folky velvet underground, the end result is something very very original and an album of very intimate warm sounds, november 2006-Cd-Ecstatic peace-€16.99

Venetian snares-Hospitality-Six track mini album from aaron funk aka venetian snares on the planet mu label, the king of gameboy techno meets ultra fast breakcore throws in a bit of lush classical string samples just to confuse us all for the first two minutes of this release, you think he has gone off in a new direction until the heavily distorted and disjointed beats kick in and then all gets back to normal, try to imagine aphex twin playing come to daddy whilst suffering from some branch of attention deficit disorder, yet again mr funk provides some of the most abstract electronic non dancefloor sounds, november 2006-Lp-Planet mu-€14.99

Veruca salt-Iv-Album number four from veruca salt and their first full length album in nearly six years, the band are now signed to the highly respected label sympathy for the record industry, the ablum features 14 classic slices of grungey pop punk sounds, these guys have a great knack for writing hard hitting abrasive rock sounds with killer catchy hooks, sounding like a blend of early hole, l7 and lots of indie pop sounds, its all high octane fun with a real pop heart at the centre, november 2006-Lp-Sympathy for the record industry-€11.99

Yabby you-Deliver me from my enemies-Blood and fire are back with a damn fine reissue of yabby yous superb album deliver me from my enemies from 1977, this new reissue now comes backed with an additional dub of the title track along with four tracks that originally appeared on 12 inch singles in 1977 and 78, also featured are two previously unreleased dubplate mixes of pick the beam by prince jammy, the original album was mixed at king tubbys studio and features sly and robbie, clinton fearon, albert griffiths, ansel collins, tommy mccook, bobby ellis and vin gordon, i simply cant get enough of this soulful roots reggae sound at the moment, features a total of 17 tracks, november 2006-Cd-Blood and fire-€18.99

Electric penguins-Goodbye from the electric penguins-Electric penguins are an irish based mostly electronica based three piece featuring mark cummins, paul murphy and sean quinn, the album is released on the very fine psychonavigation label, the album is a truly excellent collection of mellow electronic pop sounds with lots of live guitars, pianos and lush farfisa organs, there are elements of the postal service, schneider tm, early 4ad and plenty more, the vocals are all heavily processed with vocoders and there are lots of background glitchy digital effects, people who like the sounds from morr music, city centre offices etc will simply love this record, this is quite simply one of those truly excellent records that deserves a place in every home, hats off to all involved, i just cant recommend this highly enough, september 2006-Cd-Psychonavigation-€14.99

WEA Limited Edition (Only 1000 copies!) 7" 25LP Box Set $119.99

Twenty-Five slabs of serious funk from the vaults of Atlantic, Atco, Warner Brothers, Reprise and Josie records. Limited edition box set featuring twenty-five singles originally released between 1968-1977. "Too cool for school!"

Extremely Limited Edition Boxes, only 1000 made worldwide!
Highly Recommended!!!

Funk emerged in the 1960’s, a scorching sound that amped up the legacy of R&B and Doo-Wop in spirit and sonic intensity, and became the precursor of Hip-Hop: Which in fact revived funk for a new generation via sampling. While major artists topped the charts with funk hits throughout the ’60s and 70s, there were hundreds of artists that never got their due. What Is It! celebrates this heady, groove-heavy strain of "gut bucket" funk that remains a major force in American music. This 25 single boxed set that would take some serious cash to collect, if you could even find them in the dusty bins at disappearing record shops, is culled from the vaults of Atlantic, Atco, Josie and Warner Brothers Records. It’s an amazing set, pulling together rare sides from well-known artists and definitive funk grooves from lesser-known but supremely gifted masters of the art form alike.

This rare collection includes a plethora of amazing artists including: The Commodores, Wilson Pickett, Little Richard, Tony Avalon, The Meters, Eddie Hazel, Titus Turner, Jimmy Norman and many, many more!

Benni hemm hemm-Beginning end single-Features two tracks from their rather excellent album of the same name on the morr music label, the first track sounds like an instrumental belle and sebastian meets uptempo tindersticks and is just one of those really pleasant instrumental indie pop gems, the second track kicks off in a similar nature and then suddenly it breaks down to reveal some really beautiful mellow vocals in their native icelandic tongue, limited edition 7 inch only pressing on morr music, november 2006-7″-Morr music-€8.99

Boduf songs-Lion devours the sun-This is one of those beautifully quite albums that really are best enjoyed inside a set of headphones, one first listen there is a really lovely droning based folk record with mellow acoustic guitars and simple vocal accompaniment, there are odd moments of digital processing hanging around in the background with little glitches and found sounds swirling in and out of the mix, put on your headphones and all those quiet sound effects come alive, hidden away deep in the mix are sounds of doors creaking, swarms of flies and all manner of found sounds, the album overall has a real feel of a slightly more minimal psychedelic elliott smith, a real treat from the kranky label who always try to do something a bit different, november 2006-Cd-Kranky-€17.99

Bone box-Death of a prize fighter-Second album from this manchester outfit that musically sound like sparkle horse, lambchop, wilco, giant sand and the earlies with trombones, flugels and other such odd sounds, the album has an almost tom waits feel about it at times with its use of sleazy vocals over some raw americana, bluesy dirges are crossed with some spacious desert like slide guitar led americana with some really fine acoustic guitar picking, november 2006-Cd-Fat northerner-€13.99

Bonnie prince billy-Cold and wet-Taken from the most recent album the letting go on the domino label, this is a rather happy little country blues tinged folk gem from oldham calling to mind old masters like doc watson meets a bit of john fahey, the b side features a rockin raw live version of the kenny rogers classic track buried treasure featuring the full band and includes ben chasny on guitars, november 2006-7″-Domino-€3.99

Cocker, jarvis-The jarvis cocker record-The former pulp vocalist is back with his first ever solo album on the rough trade label, cocker has proven over the years his real talent for writing extremely clever guitar driven pop songs and im glad to report his lyric writing is as sharp as it has ever been, classic old style indie rock and pop is never too far away when mr cocker is around and there is plenty of his trademark dramatic vocal delivery, cocker is perfectly at home with either the rocking sounds of heavy weather or the stripped down piano driven ballads like i will kill again, this man is still one of the coolest, smoothest and cynical singers around with only morrissey coming close to him anymore, november 2006-Cd-Rough trade-€18.99

Cocker, jarvis-The jarvis cocker record-The former pulp vocalist is back with his first ever solo album on the rough trade label, cocker has proven over the years his real talent for writing extremely clever guitar driven pop songs and im glad to report his lyric writing is as sharp as it has ever been, classic old style indie rock and pop is never too far away when mr cocker is around and there is plenty of his trademark dramatic vocal delivery, cocker is perfectly at home with either the rocking sounds of heavy weather or the stripped down piano driven ballads like i will kill again, this man is still one of the coolest, smoothest and cynical singers around with only morrissey coming close to him anymore, limited edition vinyl pressing in a gatefold sleeve which comes with a bonus 7 inch single featuring the recent download only release, november 2006-Lp-Rough trade-€18.99

Curtains-Calamity-The curtains are based around chris cohen from deerhoof and natural dreamers, guests on the album include nedelle torrisi on vocals, annie lewandowski, john ringhofer from half handed cloud and sufjan stevens band on trombone, as you would imagine an album featuring a member of deerhoof this is quite a varied sound with songs changing rapidly from genre to genre, there is some excellent quirky kinda psychedelic pop sounds, noisy garage rock, melodic indie pop, avant garde art rock and plenty more inbetween all that, thirteen track album clocking in a just over 30 minutes so the tracks are all quite short and to the point, released on the asthmatic kitty label, november 2006-Cd-Asthmatic kitty-€17.50

Dogs-Soldier on-A heavy pounding punk rock meets new wave sound from dogs on the weekender label, reminscent at times like killing joke meets gang of four with the snarly punk rock attitude of early manic street preachers, its all done with big distorted guitars and bass, its both hard hitting and extremely catchy at the same time, also features danceboy on the flip side, limited edition 7 in pressing, one off order as we wont be able to get this again, november 2006-7″-Weekender records-€3.50

Dogs-Soldier on part one-A heavy pounding punk rock meets new wave sound from dogs on the weekender label, reminscent at times like killing joke meets gang of four with the snarly punk rock attitude of early manic street preachers, its all done with big distorted guitars and bass, its both hard hitting and extremely catchy at the same time, also features tracy and in your own world, november 2006-Cds-Weekender records-€3.50

Forward russia-Nineteen part one-New single from this leeds based outfit on dance to the radio, post punk sounds meets a bit of arty new wave and some highly emotional indie rock, also features ten on the flip side, november 2006-7″-Dance to the radio-€2.50

Forward russia-Nineteen part two-New single from this leeds based outfit on dance to the radio, post punk sounds meets a bit of arty new wave and some highly emotional indie rock, also features thirteen duels remix on the flip side, limited edition green vinyl pressing, november 2006-7″-Dance to the radio-€2.50

Freelovebabies-Home improvement for condemned buildings-This is the second solo album from the former spiritualized member will caruthers, his signature bass player is all over this record too, the album is based around a kind of warped bluesy psyche rock sound with plenty of raw indie rock influences and the odd hint of that familiar drug fuelled sound of early spacemen 3 and spiritualized lazer guided melodies album, november 2006-Cd-Rucksakc loveshack-€17.50

Friedberger, matthew-Winter women and the holy ghost language school-The first solo album from one half of the bonkers outfit the fiery furnaces, friedberger has put together two full albums into one package pressed on double cd, the first cd is made up of some highy enjoyable acid drenched psychedelic pop sounds calling to mind the likes of animal collective or some of the more recent ariel pink solo material, pitch that kind of thing in with the usual dramatic almost orchestral pop sounds of the last few fiery furnaces albums and you end up with something very weirdly wonderful indeed, november 2006-2cd-859 recordings-€21.99

Herbert-100lbs-Reissue of this classic early herbert album with a host of bonus material on the second cd, funky electronic jazz sounds on the accidental label, deep funky bass riffs, guitars laden with wah wah effects, lush electric pianos, rhodes keyboards, chunky synths and funky breakbeats, also features a bonus disc with b sides, rarities and remixes, november 2006-2cd-Accidental-€18.99

Jackie o motherfucker-America mystica-A collection of four separate live recordings from this free rock improv collective, the album features four rather long slow building workouts with the shortest track clocking in at 19 minutes, the tracks featured were recorded in wfmu radio in jersey, instants chaviers in paris, freedom from festival in minneapolis and finally at cube cinema in bristol, the album is a collection of slow building free improv jams with the opening sections quite reminiscent of the likes of the no neck blues band and then slowly building into some much more noisey altogether, sounding at times like a more psyched out bardo pond or even a heavier six organs of admittance, enthralling and yet again highy original sounds from jackie o, november 2006-2cd-Very friendly-€21.99

Jd king and the coachmen-American mercury-Free jazz meets psychedelic garage rock noise on thurston moores ecstatic peace label, these guys have been around for quite a long time now and actually used to feature thurston moore before he started up sonic youth, moore has finally gotten them out of semi retirement for this this release, at times similar to the rambling long tracks from the early years of sonic youth blended with the jazzy edged free rock sounds of the likes of us maple etc, november 2006-Cd-Ecstatic peace-€16.99

Lithops-Mound magnet-This is the third solo album from mouse on mars member jan st werner under his lithops moniker, the album is a collection of nine rather obscure and off kilter electronic tracks composed by lithops between 2003 and 2006, the album has a real playful gameboy like feel to it almost like listening to music composed for some manic electronic game, there are elements of the chunky motorik beats of mouse on mars but jan does away with the melodies and tends to concentrate more on beats as a form of music, the result is an album very much based on rhythm rather than melody and dabbles in a very mellow take on the the heavy duty breakcore beats of the likes of venetian snares and even aphex twin, november 2006-Cd-Thrill jockey-€18.99

Lpx-Easy music for difficult ears-Lmx is an irish based electronic artist leigh o gorman and he has previously released under the name lube project x, this limited edition 3 track ep features some of the finest irish electronica i have heard in quite a while and along with artists like the last sound, chequerboard and robert christian is further proof that the irish lads can easily keep up with some of the bigger electronic artists out there on labels like warp, rephlex etc, the ep opens up with the truly haunting sounds of wasps in a honey trap sounding like boards of canada meets third eye foundation, the tracks manages to be both mellow and deeply haunting at the same time, big chunky beats do battle with mellow tinkling synth sounds and lush washes of ambient soundscapes, the beats become heavier and more frantic on paper lanterns but are offset with some lovely minimal piano keys, on the last track ledge o gorman takes us off on a mouse on mars like trip complete with crunchy beats and heavy moog like bass keys, absolutely excellent stuff and one that deserves your attention, november 2006-Cd-Electric fix-€4.99

My morning jacket-Okonokos-21 track live album from my morning jacket, the album was recorded live at the legendary filmore in san francisco, i have to say i am not a big fan of live albums so a double live album kinda scared me at first but it really does work for these guys, the first thing to blow me away was how amazingly soulful jim james vocals are live, his voice sounds truly stunning, the second thing to turn me on to this album was just how explosive and noisy these guys can be live compared to their studio recordings, the album is based in a warped rootsy american rock with layer upon layer of heavy guitars floating around over a truly heavy rhythm section, i have really grown to love this album as i had forgotten how bloody good this band are, this limited four lp box set also comes with a full side of bonus material featuring 3 extra tracks where to begin, sooner and strangulation which are not on the cd version, november 2006-4lp-Badman-€35.99

Venetian snares-Hospitality-Six track mini album from aaron funk aka venetian snares on the planet mu label, the king of gameboy techno meets ultra fast breakcore throws in a bit of lush classical string samples just to confuse us all for the first two minutes of this release, you think he has gone off in a new direction until the heavily distorted and disjointed beats kick in and then all gets back to normal, try to imagine aphex twin playing come to daddy whilst suffering from some branch of attention deficit disorder, yet again mr funk provides some of the most abstract electronic non dancefloor sounds, november 2006-Cd-Planet mu-€17.99

Grails-Black tar prophecy-Grails are finally back with us again and are now stripped down to a four piece lineup following the loss of the violist, this is probably their darkest release to date and sees them moving radically away from their post rock sounds of old and this album takes us on a journey in some very very heavy drone rock along some truly beautiful moments of slide guitar led psyche folk, throw in a wee bit of old style krautrock experimentalism and you have one hell of a fine record, september 2006-Cd-Important records-€16.99

Hawley, richard-Coles corner-The third album from this fine songwriter all the way from exotic sheffield, hawley has definitely found his true sound on this album, he has managed to seamlessly melt together his laid back americana sound complete with slide guitar to the classic crooner sounds of the likes of sinatra and dean martin with his deep voice and some beautiful lush orchestration, this really is a fantastic record, september 2005-Lp-Mute-€22.99

Hot chip-Over and over-Limited edition reissue of this classic single from hot chip, the single now comes with a new version of over and over from a bbc maida vale session, comes with a free foldout poster, the b side is a cover of marvin gayes classic sexual healing but really sounds like another punk funk remix of over and over to me, to be honest i think the single has been mispressed as this is actually the same remix of over and over that features on the 12 inch version and is a maurice fulton dub version and not actually sexual healing, october 2006-7″-Emi-€1.99

Im from barcelona-Let me introduce my friends-Im from barcelona are in fact from sweden and features no less than 29 friends all joined together for what sounded like a lot of fun, like a great big mix of the sweet pop of the magic numbers, the group singing of the polyphonic spree and the recent summery sounds of peter bjorn and john, the album has a real happy uplifting sound to it with big group choruses and plenty of good time hand clapping, all the songs and lyrics are written by emanuel lundgren but this really is one big group effort almost like a gigantic version of the mamas and papas, september 2006-Cd-Interpop-€16.99

Mikaelas fiend-We can drive anything-Mikaelas fiend are a drum and guitar two piece on the saf label and this is one hell of a noisy piece of avant garde rock action, its got little bits of early sonic youth, don caballero, shellac and lightning bolt, they dont particularly sound like any of these bands as this is one of the most ferociously original records i have heard in ages, the pounding drums come on at 100 miles an hour and randomly veer off into pulsating freeform jazz at times whilst the heavily distorted guitar buzzsaws away like some devilsh white noise at times, none of the songs have names and they really dont need them as the ablum should be taken in as one entire 40 minute piece, this is one of the most original pieces of avant garde noise i have heard in ages and if you are partial to a bit of lightning bolt then you really really need this in your collection, september 2006-Cd-Saf records-€17.50

The Guillemots – Through the windowpane

you may have heard of the Guillemots. They were nominated in the same awards that were won by the arctic monkeys. they seem to play Ireland a lot. I’ve never seen them. I’ve just discovered them.

There are two singles off this album. They are ‘Trains to Brazil’ and ‘We’re here’. in my opnion so far, these are the best songs on the album and they are simply magnificent. If you’re heard anything it will be trains to Brazil, These singles are available on 7 inch form. If you’re into that sort of thing of course.

Me I stumped up for the double album. Twice. I have two copies here looking at me. There’s a story behind that you see. I don’t actually want the two copies but well it just kind of happened. I will bring one back. I promise.

Apparently Polydor shipped the album but shipped it without the lovely 12″ booklet that is crammed with the lyrics to the albumand the quirky childish artwork, presumably by one or more band members. Its the same kind of artwork that’s on their website at www.guillemots.com. Have a look. Its in Flash(tm).

So the booklet was missing you see. And in the first record, of the two, the spindle hole was cut badly off centre. There was a few scuff marks on teh record too. So today there I was in HMV when I saw another copy(two actually). I bought one, with lyric insert. (Its really nice). The spindle hole is fine. There’s a couple of scuff marks though. And a couple of surface marks. Oh and a few dimples. But they don’t seem to affect play badly.

Are you bored yet? Right, onto the music.

Did I mention quirky. I think they guillemots try to be quirky and they pretty much succeed. They are also hopelessly and happily romantic. Lyrics are really lovely and the singer is wearing that big old heart on his big old sleeve. Not in a coldplay kind of way. Cos while Chris Martin is usually crying in his sleeve, Fyfe dangerfield (for I believe it is he) is shaking his in the air with huge delight at this whole love thing. no really. And you will be too.He has that strained tenor voice which sometimes stretches a bit too far but when it doesn’t is really impressive and emotive.

There’s a gorgeous girl in the band. Her name is Aristazabal Hawkes and she is from canada.

Oh she plays the double bass.

‘Little Bear’ is a mood piece. Its slow and full of strings. Its pretty much heartbroken and i can’t wait for it to be over so we can get into ‘Made up lovesong #43’ which is just great. I love the lyrics and I love singing along. It sounds like a girl just rescued him. Its the joy of falling in love.

Next up is the bloody marvellous ‘trains to brazil’. Definitely a contender for single of the year. Its really happy, its really busy, its full of strings. And drums. And loads and loads of voices. And any song that talks about being in or going to Brazil has to be great.

Side two I am not mad about. The first two tracks I don’t really notice. The third I notice too much. Its quite annoying. Those tracks are ‘redwings’, ‘come away with me’ and ‘through the windowpane’. Lets get out of here.

Side three is a lot better. Kicking off with ‘If the world ends’, its a slow slow song. He’s telling the girl(who he met in made up love song #43), the ex-girl, that he loves her after all and wants to be with her when the world does end. Any day now.

And then, oh joy of joys, we get to the other single, ‘We’re here’. We are indeed Fyfe. This is another big belter of a song and ‘the world is our carpet now’. What I think that means is we can do anything if we just try. So let’s get out there and do it. Now. Its uplifting. Its high inducing. We’re here!

We couldn’t possibly maintain that level of momentumn so we fall right back to earth with the very minimalist and out of tune ‘blue would still be blue’. I won’t be listening to that one again.

Side 4 : ‘Annie, let’s not wait’ is another really busy song, full of strings, drums, synthesisers and voices. Its a good beat and the background vocals remind me of Abba. Its a song i like and will probably like more.

‘And if all’ is a short quiet bridge onto our next song, the closer; Sao Paulo. Bells are ringing. It starts slowly and it builds. And then it slows again. Its good. I like it. Its almost a summary of the album. The piano helps it sound like a Tori Amos track. And then it goes all over the place. But then it settles down again. Then we turn into Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Kind of. That’s the end of the album.

So let’s see, I like about half the songs on the album, which means musically I’m going to give this a three. Bear in mind though, some of them are classics. If they had shaved the time of the album, there’d be a higher score. The guillemots are really ambitious. Sometimes they succeed. Sometimes they don’t.

Through the windowpane is an album full of big bold melodies and behind that there is loads going on. It seems to be the kind of album that will reveal more and more and will be loved more and more.

Recording quality and vinyl quality are variable. I think the master lacquer was probably fine, and the grooves are nicely spaced, but the pressing plant wasn’t. Disappointing. Packagaing is impeccable. Nice gatefold. 2 inner picture sleeves and a big booklet.

Duke Special – Last night I nearly died

…but i woke up just in time.

The special duke releases the latest and the third in his series of 78rpm singles. All are taken from his album, Songs from the deep forest. If your player doesn’t play 78, like me, don’t worry! The B-side includes the A-side as well as err the B-sides.

There’s one less track than on previous 10″, Portrait. That brings us to three; thetitle track, a version of Feeder’s stumble and fall and another self-penned track called Glimmer girl.

The interesting Duke specialises in a quirky out of date piano driven upbeat style. He really would be at home on Broadway. The title track is a magnificent example of this. Its punchy, sweet, exciting and wonderfully romantic. It will have you bouncing around your room. Definitely worth the price of admission.

The extra tracks are not as wonderful. The cover version is more introspective but touching. Glimmer girl is bouncy but does not have the epic feel of ‘Last night…’ But they are definitely worth listening to.

Its a 78rpm ten inch. Its packaged in a nice aged-look sleeve with an inner. Recording quality is good and punchy; clean. And the vinyl pressing seems very good.

Peggy Lee – Latin ala Lee

I find myself disappointed with a lot of 1960’s recordings. They sound like they were recorded in a bucket onto dodgy compact cassettes. Instruments and vocals are a blurry mess and barely distinct.

The opposite is teh case here. Peggy’s vocals are utterly distinct and the persistent ‘Afro-cuban rhythms’ are of perfect clarity.

The sleevenotes proclaim the following; ‘Here’s Manhattan with a twist of Latin as Peggy Lee swings through hit songs from the Great White Way, accompanied by authentic Afro-Cuban rhythms’. Jack Marshall provides the music while Peggy swings err sings.

we are thus provided with an incredibly upbeat and fun album. Tracks are from My fair Lady, Oklahoma and Can-Can amongst others. So the tracks are very familiar but are remade in a style which must have been familiar to tourists to Cuba in the 1950’s.

These are tracks for dancing to and having fun to. Perhaps for romanciing to with a cocktail. And they really do sound great. The tracks like the entire record are short and each side is over just as you’re getting into the swing of things. They certainly do not outstay their welcome.

I have an older reissue which as a second hand purchase is quite noisy, but this doesn’t ruin the enjoyment of the music. My album has 11 tracks while the new reissue by steve Hoffman has 15. Check it out below. I can’t imagine it sounding much better though but you do get those ectra tracks and in pristine condition.

Goldfrapp – Felt Mountain

Goldfrapp have gone onto more popular acclaim as some sex fuelled disco funk hybrid. This their/her first album is an entirely different beast and all the better for it. Named 'Felt mountain', we're talking about the summit of a peak, isolated and frozen.

We kick off with 'Lovely head' which sounds like a cross between 'From Russia with Love' and the Dr. Who theme tune. Its eerie and sparkling, glacial and seductive. This pretty much sets the tune for the rest of the album. If thinking Cocteau Twins, think Victorialand. But all teh time with Alison Goldfrapp's alluring vocals. You really want to sink beneath those silken sheets. It is no wonder she turned into a vamp afterwards.

On this album though, rather than a metronome of a bass line we have rick, luscious backing music, full of strings and sound effects. Did I mention eerie? I'll mention it again. This is Ed Wood's ideal soundtrack.

Things get a bit menacing on 'Human' and sound like an Eastern European spy, or perhaps vampire, who's about to finish me off. Nicely squelchy weird beat to this one.

Next on 'Pilots' she seduces me again in a darling Dusty Springfield tone. Its a lullaby and I'm fast falling. 'Murmurs of our friendly machine'!! Well there you are then. Whatever you say Alison.

Side one ends off with Deer stop, which really does sound like a home recording. No sweeping strings here. Just a home made Bjork warbling away into a tissue covered mic. Just as I'm about to fall asleep I'm woken by a crescendo. Right before the song ends. I guess its time to change sides.

Which starts off with one of the more glorious moments on the record(and there are many), 'Felt Mountain. Planet of the apes, Forbidden Planet, no its Alison Goldfrapp going dee da da da da da dey dee da da da da da dey dee.

Side two is the more instrumental side, but really the music doesn't change much. Although song 2 on side 2 sounds like Amelie gone wrong, or perhaps just a reliving of the theme tune to the third mine and the disturbing Harry Lime. Yes its a brass band and a flugal horn solo on 'Oompa Radar'. Very good it is too. Alison still lends a few vocal duties. It is a Goldfrapp album after all. This is the only track on the album you could manage much of a dance to. Unless you count shoegazing or kissing your partner as dancing.

Before we finish off the album with the slow and quieter 'Horse Tears' we have the epic 'Utopia'. Beautiful! Glorious! Splendid! Drenched with strings and synthesisers. Its really bloody marvellous.

If you think this review has been flippant, don't worry that's just the wine.

Its a great album. Its uniform in tone, but its very very beautiful. If you like strings and high pitched crystalline female vocals. You'll love the album. Its a modern take and many sixties science fiction soundtracks. Its not catchy at all, and there's no way you'll be dancing to this down your local.

Buy it!

Digital recordings are cold. This music is cold. Its hard to tell which is which. Vinyl is very good from Mute. Packaging is reasonable.

Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris – All the Road running

This is on of the recent high quality record releases by warner Records. Mastered by Stan Ricker and pressed onto rather lovely 180grm vinyl biscuits it was always going to sound good.

Helpfully the copious liner notes(complete with full lyrics) let us know that this was recorded with amd opteron processors. I’m sure there should be a TM or two in there somewhere. Well what does that tell us if you’re not geek inclined. It was recorded to standard PCs without the help of Intel (TM processors. Its a digital recording. Great.

That’s not such a huge problem. Its well recorded and has a rich full basis. It doesn’t have that delicious analogue warmth you can sink your teeth into but it will quite readily satisfy the demands of impressing your mates on a Friday night after a few beers. (Though you really should try an original Led Zeppelin II for that) (Not that I know as I only have a classic reissue which still sounds great).

I never really would have considered myself such a huge Mark Knopfler fan, but on the basis of recent albums, particularly the Rag Picker’s dream, I’m becoming a fan.

He nevcer screams at me, never shouts and plays guitar in his own easy distinctive style. (Got any more TMs??)

Emmylou Harris adds her own beauty and style to the whole affair and brilliantly defining country twang. Emmylou is very American. Mark Knopfler thinks he is.

We have songs about beach combing and diamond mining. Last time I checked Newcastle on Tyne was not known for the quality of its diamonds. Then again neither is Hungary where Knopfler is a native of us. Then again that would be rag..err nit picking. Mark has taken to the US like thousands of Irish illegal immigrants.

In most of these tracks Mark ings the lead with support from Emmylou. On some tracks though its the other way around. You probably know what to expect. They each sing the way they always sing, but these voices are great. Musicianship is excellent and the sounds is, sure its only gorgeous.

For highlights try out rollin’ on. like most of the songs here(in the world perhaps) its full of yearning and heartache. Mark sounds deadpan weary. Emmylou sounds like she’s got the world on her shoulders. (such lovely shoulders) All teh roadruning is too appealing, another Harris led song. We end off the album on a slow note with smooth electric guitar in If this isn goodbye. There’s a guitar solo but its a slow guitar solo. Not quite money for nothing but its definitely Mark Knopfler.

Appealing and pleasant. Hardly ground breaking.

Gatefold packagaing with inner picture sleeves. I’ll replace them with plastic lined ones.
Excellent vinyl and pressing.
