george-harrison-libGeorge Harrison’s classic 1970 solo album ‘All Things Must Pass‘ is to be re-issued via a limited edition, numbered 180-gram vinyl in it’s original 3-LP format, EMI/Capitol have announced.

The new edition will be released on November 26th exclusively through independent record stores in the US, and will feature original recordings which have been remastered at London’s Abbey Road studios. Non-US fans will be able to purchase a non-numbered box-set, while a download version of the record will be made available throughgeorgeharrison.com.

Speaking about the landmark release, Michael Kurtz, co-founder of Record Store Day said: “George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass‘ was a milestone release in 1970 and it ranks with record store owners as one of the best albums ever released. The organizers of Record Store Day could not be more thrilled to support the restored reissue 40 years later – almost to the exact day – of this majestic album.”

Released in the November of 1970, ‘All Things Must Pass‘ quickly established Harrison as a credible solo artist following the break up of The Beatles earlier in the year, confirming his move out of Lennon and McCartney’s songwriting shadow. The album’s lead single, ‘My Sweet Lord”, was released in the UK in January 1971, and became the first solo single for a Beatle to reach number one in Britain.

Best Way To Clean Vinyl Records

How to use the Spin Clean Record Washer System MKII
You can also watch the video demo to see it in action!!
1. Remove lid from the SPIN-CLEAN® RECORD WASHER SYSTEM.

2. Remove the supplied drying cloths, rollers, and cleaning solution.

3. PRE-WASH the drying cloths in your washing machine prior to using them. Pre-washing the cloths will make them fluffy and more absorbent for drying your records.

If washing other clothes with the drying cloths, wash ONLY with whites, detergent, and bleach
DO NOT USE ANY fabric softener or dryer sheets
Cloths are REUSABLE – re-wash as necessary

4. Remove the rollers from the supplied package. Insert the rollers into one of the three roller positions. See below:

ROLLER POSITION: Outside – RECORD TYPE: 33 rpm (LP) – DISTANCE: 12″
ROLLER POSITION: Center – RECORD TYPE: 78 rpm – DISTANCE: 10″
ROLLER POSITION: Inside – RECORD TYPE: 45 rpm – DISTANCE: 7″

5. Fill the SPIN-CLEAN® RECORD WASHER MKII with distilled water to the indicator line on the inner side-wall of the basin. You can use tap water if distilled water is not available.

6. Pour Washer Fluid MKII directly over the top of the inserted brushes in the wash basin – using the amounts listed in the following:

WASHER FLUID MKII – 4 oz. CAPFULS – 3
WASHER FLUID MKII – 8 oz. – CAPFULS – 1
WASHER FLUID MKII – 16 oz. – CAPFULS – 1
WASHER FLUID MKII – 32 oz. – CAPFULS – 1

The Washer Fluid MKII encapsulates the dirt and forces it to the bottom of the basin, preventing it from being re-deposited onto the record. The bright yellow color of the SPIN-CLEAN® Record Washer MKII allows you to easily see the dirt collecting at the bottom when you are done cleaning.
Each time you prepare the unit for a cleaning session, the bath will clean 20-50 records. The actual number of records will vary depending on how dirty your records are.

7. Insert your record into the SPIN-CLEAN® Record Washer System MKII.

8. Rotate the record CLOCKWISE three times and then COUNTER CLOCKWISE three times.

9. Carefully remove and wipe the record with the pre-washed reusable drying towel in a CLOCKWISE CIRCULAR MOTION.

10. Once dry, your record is ready to be played or returned to its sleeve.
WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED CLEANING YOUR RECORDS,

11. Remove the brushes from the basin, rinsing THOROUGHLY with warm water, press out any excess liquid, and let them AIR DRY on top of the unit. We DO NOT RECOMMEND leaving brushes in the unit filled with solution unless you are washing records.
We recommend a “cleaning session” where you set aside a period of time and clean as many records from a single basin filling. If you choose to fill the unit and only clean a few records, you can save the solution in the basin with the lid on for up to ONE WEEK – but you MUST remove the brushes, rinse thoroughly with warm water, press out any excess liquid, and permit them to AIR DRY – only returning the brushes to the basin in the solution when you are ready to clean records again.

12. If you are NOT saving the washer fluid solution to use again, remove the brushes, thoroughly rinse with warm water and press out excess liquid and let the brushes to AIR DRY on top of the unit.

13. Discard solution and thoroughly rinse basin and rollers with warm water.

14. Once all components are dry, place clean rollers and brushes back into the unit which is now ready for your next cleaning session.

Add Years To Your Vinyl Record Collection!

Anyone who has used the conventional brush type record cleaner knows how awkward they are to use and that they have limited ability. Spin-Clean Record Washer MKII’s secret weapon is its special washer fluid. This special formula encapsulates the dirt that comes off the record and sinks it to the bottom of the washer basin so it is not re-deposited back on to your valuable records. Why is Spin-Clean Bright Yellow? We chose bright yellow for the color of the Spin-Clean so you can see the dirt collecting at the bottom of the unit.

Roger Waters – Amused to Death on vinyl re-release

Its a bit of a rumour,

but in the current edition of The Absolute Sound Greg Calbi mentions that he is currently using lacquers to cut the new remasters of Roger Waters’ albums. If this is true it suggests that we might see a long overdue re-release of Amused to Death on vinyl. I had a copy of the original years ago but was contacted over the internet and was offered what seemed like good money at the time. Not as it turns out, anything close to what people are willing to pay(or charge) for it now. I have seen prices of €500 for this double LP.

A new re-pressing would sell very well indeed. Here’s to hoping! If anyone has any extra information please let us know.

Gipsy Kings – Gipsy Kings

By augmenting the traditional sound of Flamenco(guitars and hand-claps) with extra percussion, bass and even synthesizer the Gipsy Kings broke through to a massive international audience in 1988 and after. Despite the name this album was not their first album but was brought to a wider audience by the lively production and the attention of the record company. From the Catalan region in the south of France, they brought their Latin Gypsy music and temperament to the world.

Exciting and rhythmic the music is impossible to ignore and one can only dance along with the excitement and passion the music is played with. Massive hits such as Bomboleo and Djobi Djoba are joined by calmer instrumentals such as Moorea and the more forlorn love-songs such as Amor Amor.

Each and every song is played by a band of expetr musicians who put in their music all the passion and desire of their race.

This edition, mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed by RTI for Audio Fidelity displays even more of the excellent recording. More subtle elements such as the Bass and some percussion are revealed, as much to the body as the ear. Every component of  the music, instrumental or vocal has extra space in which to live and breathe and you can only sit back(or dance)  and marvel at the intricacies of the arrangements and the playing.

Packaging is a little bit disappointing. The cover is a blurred copy of the original while the inner sleeve is a plain white polylined sleeve. But you are not losing any artwork from the original.

Highly recommended on all counts!

Spiritualized – Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in Space

Has there been a better named album? The seemingly absurdist statement Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space actually gets directly to the core of Spiritualized and to what is arguably the best post-Nirvana rock album of the 1990s. A quote from Jostein Gaarder’s introduction to Western philosophy, Sophie’s World, it was originally coined to describe the extreme nature of clear-sighted thinkers who undertake a “perilous expedition to the outermost reaches of language and existence”. And while drawing analogies between interplanetary travel and more earthbound states of mind such as heartbreak, philosophy, drug use and insanity is as old as rock’n’roll itself, Jason Pierce used his grand creative vision to inject the metaphor with new life and strange vitality.

After the unpleasant demise of lauded cult 80s drone-rock group Spacemen 3, Pierce had talked a good game (and had gone some way to living up to the hype on Pure Phase). But it was only really on this 1997 effort that he managed to successfully combine his love for psych-rock, gospel, drone, electric jazz fusion and thunderous rock’n’roll with the kind of widescreen, immersive production that sounded like it had been crafted by Phil Spector, Wagner and Teo Macero.

The songs were written immediately after a painful separation from Kate Radley, Spiritualized’s keyboard player; she had left Pierce for The Verve’s Richard Ashcroft (which in some respects is like finishing with Nick Drake to go out with Shakin’ Stevens). The clutch of songs not only capture the incessant and raw pain of heartbreak in detail, but also the late-90s post-rave mood of poly-drug use in the UK on a macro level. And what songs they are. I Think I’m In Love is pure (Brit) pop, revelling in the temporary relief from heartbreak offered by self-medication. Electricity crackles with heavy rock malevolence. Pain and the false hope of sweet relief come in waves, so by the time you reach the closing double whammy of gospel beatification Cool Waves and the moody, epic voodoo-rock coda of the Dr John collaboration Cop Shoot Cop, even the listener feels like they have been through the emotional wringer.

This album was initially released a s very limited vinyl pressing(500?). Many of these were returned as they were mispressed and there was never a second pressing. Until now! Plain are releasing many classic indie albums from the 1990’s a time of great scarcity for vinyl lovers. Like the Flaming Lips’ Soft Bulletin the vinyl edition of this album was fetching silly prices on Ebay. I held one of these original copies in my hand in London in 1997 and debated buying it. It had already been returned by another disgruntled user as it was skipping. I passed figuring that I’d buy a copy of the repress. That never appeared so I did pick up a copy of the single cd.

So, how did Plain do? Well the packaging is simple enough but true to the original. Plain enough white sleeve with plain coloured inners all designed to look like a pill box with two pills inside. Although on Plain, it says manufactired by Sony Entertainment,

And the sound? Well aside from the extra noise that vinyl provides this sounds identical to the CD and sadly, and particularly at the price, I have to say there is no point in buying this over the CD. Especially now that there is an expanded 3 CD version with lots of extras.

Plain/4MWB/Lilith continue their policy of ripping off the public with vinyl pressed from CDs.
