Bellafea-Cavalcade-The debut full length album from this american based
outfit from north carolina. The album features a lovely blend of gritty
indie rock and sleazy blues dirges. Sounding a little at times like early
cat power meets the fuzzed up guitar blues of come. The album is full of
intense blasts of heavy guitar sounds akin to the likes of blood red shoes
blended with the slightly more laid back bluesy vibes of cat power. Guests
on the album include daniel hart and mountain goats head honcho john
darnielle. September 2008-Cd-Southern records-€18.99

Bruntnell, peter-Peter and the murder of crows-A really lovely collection of
mellow and very melodic roots and folk sounds from peter bruntnell on the

rootsy folk ala the pernice brothers and even some of the more uptempo
sounds of lambchop. Its a lovely intimate collection of mainly acoustic
based songs with just the odd hint of sparse electric guitar. September

Grubbs, david-An optimist notes the dusk-David grubbs returns with a new
album on the drag city label with guests michael evans on drums and nate
wooley on trumpet. Apart from the two guests its pretty much mr grubbs with

erickson. This is probably one of the heaviest pieces of music to date from

kooky ethereal sounds of stina nordenstam but this one has much more of a
laptop folk feel to it. September 2008-Cd-Rough trade-€14.99

another beautifully intimate collection of mellow folky based sounds with

a lovely blend of live instruments and delicate electronic sounds with
plenty of intricate beats and keyboard effects. There are elements of the
kooky ethereal sounds of stina nordenstam but this one has much more of a
laptop folk feel to it. September 2008-Lp-Rough trade-€19.99

Black keys-Attack and release-Album number five from this guitar and drums
two piece. Features some exceptional blues dirge like barroom rock sounds
with lots of nods to sixties garage rock and old style garage blues sounds.
The album was produced by the much in demand danger mouse and sees the band
add in lots of heavy keyboard and analogue moog sounds into the mix. Its
still pretty much a blues based sound again with their sound falling
somewhere between the raw sounds of jon spencer blues explosion and the
total groove of led zeppelin. April 2008-Cd-V2-€15.99

Black kids-Hurricane jane [part two, orange vinyl]-Black kids return with a
newly recorded version of this very limited single which originally came out
last year. Its a totally infectious slice of funky indie pop and a fine
follow up to their last single im not gonna teach your boyfriend how to
dance with you.-7"-Almost gold recordings-€3.99

Black kids-Im not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance with you [white
vinyl]-This could quite easily turn into one of those singalong indie hits
of the summer from the black kids. The single is one of those tracks that
will lodge itself in your head and you will most likely be singing it all
day long. Its got one of those infectious shouty group choruses over a song
that sounds like a more straight ahead melodic pop take on the sounds of the
likes of arcade fire or broken social scene. Also features twelves remix and
twelves remix dub version on the flip side. Limited edition white vinyl
pressing. April 2008-12"-Almost gold recordings-€8.99

Blood red shoes-This is not for you [limited to only 1000 copies]-The third
single to be lifted from their debut album this is not for you. Its another
piece of blistering indie rock meets old school grunge rock and riot grrrl
post punk. Also features carry knots on the flip side. July 2008-7"--€2.99

Boss volenti-Boss volenti-The debut album from this rather excellent new
irish retro rock outfit, features the drumming talent of ex therapy drummer
graham hopkins, features the singles aint no use and deeper than deep, old
style heavy rock sounds complete with screeching guitar solos blended with
some heavy grunge rock sounds, its uptempo, it rocks, it fun and there aint
a single acoustic ballad in sight, great stuff indeed, september
2006-Cd-Boss volenti-€12.99

Crucial bunny versus prince jammys-Fatman dub contest-A damn fine heavy dub
album from way back in 1979, the album was originally released in very
limited quantities and has been long out of print, the album was recorded in
black ark studios, channel one studios, studio 12 and fat mans place,
features sly and robbie, ranchie, tony chin, chinna smith, skully and
barnabus, features four mixes on side one from prince jammy and four on side
two from crucial bunny, may 2007-Lp-Auralux-€13.99

Davies, rhodri withdavid lacey and dennis mcnulty-Poor trade-This
collaboration between welsh harpist davies, and dublin based sound artists
david lacey on percussion and dennis mcnulty on computer features 3 free
improvised pieces of shimmering, undulating soundscape. Recorded at st
patricks church in dalkey in sept 2006-Cd-Cathnor recordings-€11.99

Drunken boat-Cut the engines raise the sails-Drunken boat are a new irish
based two piece featuring brian walsh and simon brennan. These guys used
looped guitars, vocals and laptop electronica to truly great effects on this
debut album released through their own label. Its got elements of a slightly
more folky sounding dave pajo aka papa m the way they use looped repetitive
intricate guitar threads behind subtle vocals and plenty of computer based
sounds. The album also features lots of the atmospheric background sounds
that you would hear from labels like touch or expanding. The addition of
cello and banjo towards the end gives the album a slightly more live organic
feel. Really lovely stuff. November 2007-Cd-Say what you mean records-€4.99

Ham sandwich-Sad songs-Features sad songs, click click boom and this
screaming silence.-Cds-Route 109 records-€3.99

Hauschka-Prepared piano-Volker bertelmann aka hauschka came to our attention
with his recent album room to expand on the fat cat and we have managed to
track down his previous album from 2005, this is some more really beautiful
minimal piano music with definite nods towards the likes of john cale etc,
short repetitive piano loops create a hypnotic like feel as strings slowly
come into the mix, if you are a fan of the likes of the rachels, steve
reich, eric satie, john cale then i highly recommend this to you,
2005-Cd-Karaoke kalk-€18.99

Jape-Ritual-The third solo album from jape aka richie egan who also doubles
up as bass player with the redneck manifesto. The album features ten slices
of wonderfully laid back electronic pop sounds with one or two more laid
back folky based acoustic tunes thrown in. Its got the perfect blend of
electronic beats, synth effects and live guitars so as to fall somewhere
between blissful summer electronic pop and funky indie rock. Lovers of funky
electro pop will love this as will fans of top quality new wave and indie
pop. June 2008-Cd-V2-€15.99

Metallica-Ride the lightning-Originally released all the way back in 1984
this was the second album from metallica and the follow up to kill em all.
Hear the album just as it was always intended to be. The album has been
specially mastered for this version direct from the analog master tapes and
features two heavyweight slabs of vinyl playing at 45 rpm for ultra high
quality sound reproduction. Features fight fire with fire, ride the
lightning, for whom the bell tolls, fade to black, trapped under ice,
escape, creeping death and the call of ktulu. Comes in a lovely heavy card
gatefold sleeve too. June 2008-2lp-Universal-€25.99

Newsom, joanna-Ys-Finally the follow up to the milk eyed mender from 2004,
the original recordings of newsom and her harp were made by steve albini
with the legendary van dyke parks adding a whole host of orchestration and
lush arrangements over the top of it all, the album consists of five long
tracks and is the most ambitious thing she has approaced so far, the sounds
from the first album are still around with newsoms original song
compositions merely bulked up the van dyke parks truly grandiose
arrangements, newsoms lyrics read like extended poems or short stories and
she has really proven herself as one of the finest songwriters around at the
moment, this is one of the most dramatically haunting albums i have heard
and does bear some comparisons to the intricate arrangements of the likes of
kate bush at times, its already one of my albums of the year, you will see
the word opus many times when you read reviews of this album but this truly
justifies it already, november 2006-Cd-Drag city-€14.99

O doherty, david-Giggle me timbers or jokes ahoy-19 track live recording
from one of irelands finest upcoming comedians, the album was recorded live
in the artists home on the 2nd of march 2006 in front of a small intimate
audience, comes in a card digipack sleeve, available exclusively from road
records for one month only, december 2006-Cd-Trust me im a thief-€13.99

Port o brien-All we could do was sing-The second album from this californian
based indie rock outfit now signed to the city slang label. The album
carries on the good time indie rock feel of their debut album the wind and
the swell from 2007. At times they kind of remind me of a mash up of
pavement, grandaddy and the beach boys whilst they also delve into some
totally rocking grunged up indie rock sounds and fuzzy roots rock vibes.
There is also a bit of the avant indie sounds of bands like broken social
scene or arcade fire but these guys tend to lean more towards the melodic
more pop like side of things. August 2008-Cd-City slang-€15.99

Seventy nine cortinaz-Hopioki-The debut album from this irish based poppy
alt rock outfit on feckd records which was produced by the legendary damned
member rat scabies. The album is full of bouncy and catchy indie rock sounds
with a real emphasis on the more melodic side of things, imagine a slighly
more poppy take on the sounds of mercury rev. January 2008-Cd-Feckd
records-€17.99

So cow-Im siding with my captors-The second album from so cow on the covert
bear label. So cow is pretty much a one man band with a deep deep love of
all things diy and indie rock by the sounds of things. This is an album of
pure lo fi pop genius in our opinion taking in a bit of everything from the
slacker rock of pavement to the totally jangly guitar sounds of the c86
bands or the likes of sarah records. Fans of early pastels and the likes
will love this for its pure lo fi bedroom quality. The album features eleven
incredibly catchy slices of pure indie pop with a lovely raw feeling about
them. A true underground hit from this irish born artist. May 2008-Cd-Covert
bear records-€11.99

Spiritualized-Songs in a & e [double vinyl pressing]-Album number six from
the former spacmen 3 frontman jason pierce and his ever changing
spiritualized outfit. Its obvious at this stage that pierce doesnt really do
the whole happy sound so you know what to expect from him now and this one
which was written during a long stay in hospital delves even deeper into the
murky world of near death experiences and spirituality. Its very much a
downbeat sombre affair with the odd track like soul on fire lifting its head
out of the darkness. The album is quite similar at times to the amazing
grace album with pierce enlisting both a string section and choir again.
Features a guest spot from garage rockers the dirtbombs on the track yeah
yeah. Double vinyl pressing in heavy card gatefold sleeve. May
2008-2lp-Sanctuary records-€23.99

Yorke, thom-The eraser-Thom yorke from radiohead releases his first solo
record, the album definitely carries on from where the last radiohead album
left us with its clever use of glitchy electronic beats and soundscapes,
obviously without the band behind him yorke has gone for a much more sedate
and mellow affair, the album features lots of little casiotone beats, warm
electronic keys, scratchy guitars and yorks distinctive vocal delivery, its
like a blend of the heavy claustrophic sounds of ok computer and much
funkier electronics of hail to the thief, comes packaged in a lovely foldout
card sleeve, july 2006-Cd-Xl-€16.50

Vinyl 2 Flash

 http://www.product-reviews.net/2008/09/11/ion-lp-2-flash-can-record-lps-to-digital-format/

ION LP 2 FLASH can record LPs to digital format

Now this is fantastic if you have many LPs sitting around, the ION LP 2 FLASH vinyl player can record LPs to flash (digital format).

Apparently vinyl sales are on the up but many of us still prefer digital format, CDs etc, but then again there are many that still prefer the good old Vinyl 33s and 45s. The Ion LP 2 Flash turntable is something special, yes looking at it looks like a standard turntable deck but it is within that all the magic happens.

This turntable has connectors on them that allow you to plug in an SD card, USB hard drive or USB thumb drive, so in simple terms allows you to convert vinyl records into digital format. For more information please visit the ION website where you can buy it for around £130.

eBay is a drag

 http://blogs.courant.com/eric_danton_sound_check/2008/09/why-ebay-is-a-drag-for-record.html

Why eBay is a drag for record collectors

c84c_12.JPGThere's plenty to love about eBay. The online auction site has made it possible to track down almost anything you could want, from odd collectibles to the private jet Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she put up for sale to hard-to-find vinyl records.

Yet eBay is a drag for the same reason, at least when it comes to vinyl. Sure, you can find rare 45s and weird German white label pressings from the comfort of your living room sofa, and own them merely by outbidding other collectors at the last second. But there's a certain joy to flipping through record-store bins, hoping to come across that piece of wax you've been searching for, to pulling the record out of its sleeve and inspecting it yourself.

I had spent quite a bit of time looking in record stores all over the country for the long out-of-print double-vinyl release of Uncle Tupelo's second two albums, "Still Feel Gone" and "March 16-20, 1992." But the rise of eBay made it seem increasingly unlikely that I'd ever find it — an awful lot of the LPs for sale on eBay, especially the more coveted ones, seem to come from record stores, which means those records aren't in the bins. In a way, that's good — it's probably helping to keep record stores alive.

This particular album seems to crop up pretty frequently on eBay, usually for more than I'm wiling to pay. Yesterday, though, while waiting for a Hatebreed interview that never happened, I finally gave in and managed to submit the winning bid, completing my collection of Uncle Tupelo vinyl. Part of me, though, is going to miss heading for the "U" section of the record store to see if maybe, just maybe, a copy would be there waiting for me.

Audiophiles' Delight: Vinyl LPs Still Sell

Those old-fashioned analog platters (with the warm sound) aren't back from the dead; they were never quite buried in the first place

Rising LP sales are proving that every fashion comes back if you stick around long enough. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reports that shipments of vinyl records, measured by dollar value, increased 36.6% from 2006 to 2007. But, while demand for albums has increased, record sales remain significantly lower than those of compact discs and digital media. More than half a billion CDs were purchased in 2007, compared with about 1.3 million vinyl LPs.

"Demand for records has grown, but it's kind of like the dandelion in the weed patch," says Geoff Mayfield, chart director at Billboard magazine. "Growth is high because the base is so small." The RIAA declined to comment.

Despite the minuscule retail figures, the format's popularity has never wavered over the decades among audiophiles, LP enthusiasts, and serious music collectors. Vinyl is often praised as the medium of warmth and richness, delivering playback that most closely represents a live musical experience. Purists sniff that digital routinely registers as cold and antiseptic. CDs can also suffer from a reduced spatial sense in a listener's soundstage. "Digital audio systems are mere easy-to-use devices for people who have yet to discover the joy of live music. It can be said that such systems are deflating music," according to the Web site of Samurai International, a Tokyo company that distributes high-end turntable tonearms and cartridges.

Ear Addiction

But for audiophiles, the sonic warmth of analog vinyl often comes with a hefty price tag. Some state-of-the-art turntables, such as Goldmund's Reference II model from Switzerland, sell for as much as $300,000. No matter—for some people, good audio is worth any price. "When you hear a song you know that sounds better than you've ever heard before, it's addictive," says Robert Harley, editor of The Absolute Sound, a monthly magazine covering high-performance audio. "You have to have it."

When it comes to the cutting edge of vinyl playback, the sky is truly the limit. A turntable can soar into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. A needle cartridge designed by Japan's Koetsu can set an audiophile back $15,000. Even the records themselves are subject to higher prices. Retail rates for heavier, and therefore more durable, albums weighing 180 to 200 grams start at $18.99. But, with the addition of art and specialty packaging, the cost of a 200-gram, limited-edition Japanese import of The Police classic Ghost in the Machine or Bob Marley's Burnin' can go for as much as $60, plus shipping costs.

While the higher tiers of advanced sound playback can induce wallet-clutching shock and awe, music lovers of modest means don't have to take out a second mortgage to enjoy a fine vinyl experience. "High-end buyers represent the extreme tip of the market," says Jonathan Atkinson, editor-in-chief of SourceMedia's Stereophile.com. That's not to say that great sound cannot be had with a pair of $600 speakers, a $500 turntable, and an amplifier costing less than $1,000, he adds.

Different audio media, such as eight-track and cassette tapes, have come and gone. And, as compact discs are increasingly supplanted by digital downloads, some speculate that even the mighty CD could one day fade into obscurity. However, if unit sales are any indication, vinyl, it seems, may indeed be forever.
