in a frozen sea – tour book (april 2007)

artist in residence (a+r), is a quarterly publication that is destined to become the finest purveyor of artist appreciation, the epitome of ultimate fandom. created by music industry veteran jeff anderson, a+r's publication regards the artist it covers with a large degree of intimacy, previously unseen in other media formats. a+r's first book, in a frozen sea: a year with sigur ros, follows internationally renowned band, sigur ros, through their native iceland on the last leg of the 2006 takk world tour. featuring original, striking imagery from the viewpoints of both the fan in the crowd and the fan backstage, the publication presents a unique insight into the artist by way of exclusive interviews and observations.

being the music lovers that they are, the creators of a+r understand the excitement and value surrounding a collector's item – and for sigur ros fans, in a frozen sea: a year with sigur ros is absolutely it. the 32-page publication comes encased in a 12" vinyl jacket, and features photography of both the band and the vast icelandic landscape, setting a beautiful context for the band's music. during sigur ros' gratis tour of iceland, the band found themselves playing everywhere from the nation's capitol of reykjavik to small towns in the icelandic countryside, setting up stages wherever they went (with full brass and string ensemble, of course). the publication's images give sigur ros' songs a visual backdrop like no other – from behind the stage and beyond the crowd, you see vast mountains, glacier tips, coniferous trees reaching skyward, all blending in with the bend of an azure sky. a+r captures all the details, from information about iceland's most famous musical church (and the stunning photo of sigur ros playing in front of it) to the faces of fans enraptured with the band's live show, to a shot capturing singer/guitarist jonsi in a shoe-less moment on stage, curling his socked toes under as he performs. artist appreciation, indeed.

in a frozen sea: a year with sigur ros is available to order on june 1, 2007 at a+r's website – – and will also be stocked in select stores. for the true fan, there will be 5,000 limited edition vinyl album collections. this special edition run contains in a frozen sea, as well as three of sigur ros' 12" lp's including agaetis byrjun, ( ), takk and smaskifa, which has yet to be released in a 12" format (seven pieces of vinyl total). these albums have been re-released and repackaged solely for this artist in residence exclusive.

in addition to the publication, a+r offers an interactive web playground for the ultimate fan through the website is the ultimate fan experience, featuring unique loft-style rooms where you can listen to sigur ros' music, screen sigur ros' videos and community flash message boards where fans can interact. in addition, a+r contains a special studio and lounge section for independent and unsigned acts to submit their music, which will ultimately be judged by a+r's panel of judges. for the first book, the judges will include famed producers alan moulder and flood, as well as sigur ros themselves. a small handful of these undiscovered acts selected by a+r's judges will ultimately be presented in a unique showcase in a+r's lounge.

The classic publication is a coffee table style book it seems.

Warner Bros. Records to Release Two Brand-New Tracks From Built to Spill

Warner Bros. Records to Release Two Brand-New Tracks From Built to Spill on July 10, 2007

Boise, Idaho Quintet on Tour in the U.S. Through September

BURBANK, CA–(Marketwire – June 28, 2007) – Warner Bros. Records will release two reggae-flavored tracks — a brand-new song titled "They Got Away" and a cover of The Gladiators' "Re-Arrange" — from Boise, Idaho quintet BUILT TO SPILL on July 10th. The tracks will be available from online retailers as digital downloads and in stores as a 12"-vinyl single. The single will also be on sale on tour dates after July 10, listed below, while supplies last.

The two tracks — the first new music from BUILT TO SPILL since their 2006 album "You In Reverse" — were recorded last year while the band was on tour in support of the album, which was recently re-released, along with 1997's "Perfect From Now On" and 1999's "Keep It Like A Secret," in limited edition vinyl. Songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch explains that reggae is not necessarily the new direction that BTS is headed. "'They Got Away,' came out of jamming. This one jam just took on a life of its own, it evolved over time. We were reluctant to do a reggae song but we started to really like it. We figured it's a good reggae song, might as well run with it." Doug further explains the recording process of the tracks: "Dave Tromfio (producer/mixer – Wilco, Ok Go) recorded it very stripped down, close to the live versions, no overdubs, only the overdubs of the effects. We just happened to stumble upon a reggae song that we couldn't not do. I want to make sure that people don't think we are becoming a reggae band. We play reggae because we love to play it."

Because sound matters : Finally up

It should be stated that at the moment it is a very bare-bones site. Just really a taster of what is to come. There should be a proper launch on July 1st. So don't be too surprised at what's there at the moment. But for now you can have a taste.

Kevin Gray/Steve Hoffman remastering of Warner Bros./Reprise catalog for Rhino vinyl!

As most of the world knows today, it has finally been announced that Rhino/WB/Reprise has undertaken the most ambitious vinyl reissue program of any major label in recent history.

Spurred on by a vinyl lover high up in the Warner Bros./Reprise records administration, I can now reveal that Kevin and I have been remastering for Rhino 180 gram vinyl the cream of the WB/Reprise back catalog for release. Mastered at AcousTech and pressed on virgin vinyl at RTI, Camarillo, these albums will feature the original artwork, track listings and (most importantly to me) are all being cut in true analog from the original Warner Bros./Reprise stereo master mixes, some untouched for 35 years.

There will be a dedicated website where you will be able to order these titles and much more:

They will also be at the usual places (Acoustic Sounds, Music Direct, etc.)

Also, BRAND NEW WB RELEASES are coming in vinyl. You have seen our mastering efforts from analog tape to lacquer on the current TOM PETTY/Highway Companion and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS/Stadium Arcadium, Mastering legend Stan Ricker has cut from hi-rez digital DIRE STRAITS/Brothers In Arms, etc. and most of you have grabbed JONI MITCHELL's/Blue, our first Rhino "reissue vinyl" attempt. We are working on the new WHITE STRIPES/Icky Thump right now (from amazing sounding 1" 30 ips master tapes) and such classic albums as FLEETWOOD MAC/Rumours, RICKIE LEE JONES, JAMES TAYLOR/Sweet Baby James, Mudslide Slim, VAN MORRISON/Moondance, ZZ Top/Tres Hombres, Fandango, FRANK SINATRA and MANY HUNDREDS MORE. If you are patient, you will see your own personal favorites on the list, all painstakingly (and I mean PAINSTAKINGLY) cut directly from the original analog master tapes.

Now threads like the Van Morrison Moondance thread below are probably making more sense to you:…d.php?t=102782

FRIENDS, this is the time to buy a turntable. Trust me on this: You will not hear these classic titles sound better anywhere, ever!

to get on their email mailing list. It will be well worth your while!

Stay tuned. Much more to come.

ATLANTA, GA April 27 2005 Warner Brothers records with Rhino/Reprise recently announced that they have hired Steve Hoffman, one of the world’s most revered mastering engineers, to undertake the most ambitious vinyl reissue program of any major label in recent history. Steve will be mastering with cutter Kevin Gray at Kevin’s AcousTech Mastering and records will be pressed on 180 gram virgin vinyl at RTI – all are being cut in true analog from original Warner Brothers/Reprise stereo master mixes – some of which have been untouched for 35 years.

Steve Hoffman shares, “The old “EQ Cutting Masters” had compromises built in to the sound of the tapes. In the old days the tapes were routinely EQ’d, compressed and sometimes filtered to make it easy for needles to track the groove. When I bypass those tapes the original untouched master mixes reveal a whole new scene; detailed, beautiful sounding dynamic music appears and we can cut this directly onto a phonograph record.”

At Mr. Hoffman’s request, Signals-SuperFi, LLC, in concert with Continuum Audio Labs of Australia, will provide a Criterion turntable and Copperhead tonearm for test-pressing evaluation. Asked why he chose Continuum for the job, Steve remarked, “I heard the Continuum Criterion turntable with the special Copperhead tonearm at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show and was impressed by the resolving sound. This system will be perfect for my evaluation of the Rhino/WB/Reprise vinyl 180 gram test pressings from RTI.”

“We’re terribly excited about the project,” confides Chris Sommovigo, owner of Signals-SuperFi and distributor of Continuum’s record players in North America. “The fact that Warner Bros./Reprise/Rhino is showing this much commitment to the vinyl format – to not just cut and release LPs from the old EQ Masters but to hire Steve to re-master the albums entirely – is really fantastic news for vinyl lovers. Continuum’s analog gear will give Steve the kind of tool that no mastering engineer has had at his disposal before, and Steve will – in turn – be delivering some of the best vinyl ever set onto a turntable.”

Eleanor McEvoy – Out There

Eleanor McEvoy – Out There

Diverse records has been one of my favourite record labels. I've been disappointed because they have been very quiet for the past couple of years. But I am delighted to see the following announcement. Eleanor McEvoy's 'Yola' was magnificent. I have not heard this new album but hope it reaches the same highs.

We are delighted to announce that the next release on the Diverse Records label will be the 5th album by the Irish singer songwriter, Eleanor McEvoy "Out There".

Forever associated with 'Only A Woman's Heart', massively underrated Irish singer songwriter Eleanor McEvoy raises the stakes with an ambitious self-produced, self-arranged album. It tackles Marvin Gaye and Lowell George and includes a Dave Rotheray collaboration along with her own immaculately tuneful, lyrically potent tales of love and life.
"Out There" has already been a hit at the hi fi shows this year on SACD, but along with "Early Hours" and the repress of "Yola", we're hoping it's going to sound even better on the Diverse label proprietory 180g audiophile vinyl.

As usual, mastering duties will be handled by Ray Staff at Alchemy Mastering, and pressing at Pallas in Germany. Release date to be confirmed at the moment, so please keep your eye out for more news as it breaks.

For a Bob Dylan album – and one that many consider to be his best  – Nashville Skyline doesn’t mess around with ambiguity. It’s a country album, plain and simple, with Dylan abandoning his fabled  talk-sing voice and evangelical message for a soothing, down-home country croon. The new style was a perfect fit for some of Dylan’s strongest material ever, including “Lay Lady Lay,” “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You” and “I Threw It All Away.” There’s also a superb duet with Johnny Cash on “Girl from the North Country” that, along with the Byrds’ earlier Sweetheart of the Rodeo LP, officially breaks the champagne bottle over a brand new musical genre: country-rock. Rhino announces Doors vinyl box set

Update: There seems to be some confusion over what mixes will be used. New or original? Digital or analog? Also it looks like there will be 7,500 copies of the box released.

From the official doors website…

These LPs will be the original MIXES, but completely REMASTERED by Bernie Grundman, Bruce Botnick and Jac Holzman personally, then pressed onto 180g virgin vinyl at a high-end audio LP manufacturing facility (the same one that does, I believe, Chesky, Mobile Fidelity, Telarc, etc. – but don't quote me on this).

Don't confuse the vinyl LPs (as elucidated above) with the 40th Anniversary CDs, which contain the brand new 40th Anniversary MIXES.

Sweetheart of the Rodeo will forever be revered as the Byrds' 1968 album that opened the eyes of the hip and the young to country music. Whether it was the first country-rock album doesn't really matter: It was certainly the best and most heartfelt such excursion and paved the way for fabled combos the Flying Burrito Bros. and Poco yet to come. Sweetheart featured the first extensive lineup change for the Byrds, as Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman said goodbye to David Crosby, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke and welcomed former International Submarine Band leader Gram Parsons into the fold. With his magical voice and bona fide country pedigree, Parsons helped unleash a style that had already begun to seep into the Byrds' sound. And now Sundazed makes available a perfect replica of the original vinyl release of the ever-enduring Sweetheart of the Rodeo. To order go to:
