Akron family-Meek warrior-Follow up to last years split album with the
angels of light from this brooklyn quartet, real psychedelic folk stuff
here, and by that i mean the album portrays the finest elements of both old
folk and psych records throughout the songs on this album, the vocals more
often than not are a whole band effort resulting in striking harmonies, some
of the songs were recorded in canada with do make say think and broken
social scene, and also features legendary free jazz drummer hamid drake,

the rocord of the week, the sea swells is a three track album with each

loops and layers of processed guitar sounds, blending these beautiful drones
into tape loops and drum machines he has made an album of realy beauty,
falling somewhere between the likes of windy and carl, labradford, brian eno

night headphone album, october 2006-Cd-A silent place-€19.99 Beirut-Gulag orkestar-Beirut is nineteen year old multi instrumentalist zach
condon from albuquerque, the album features guest appearences from neutral
milk hotels jeremy barnes and heather trost from a hawk and a hacksaw, the
album comes across as a collection of archival eastern european folk songs
with lots of mandolins, ukuleles and disjointed scratch brass sounds, condon
adds his beautifully dramatic deep baritone voice over these sounds to make
an album that sounds like a miniature trip around the world, a hugely
enjoyable new take on the current sounds of acid folk and an album that will
suck you in on first listen, highly recommended, now reissued on the 4ad
label and features the bonus cd ep lon gisland which wasnt on the original

structure, in the space of 3 minutes these guys can take you off on a real
journey around weird chord progressions and broken rhythms, some track will
launch off in a new wave punk funk fashion only to change 30 second later in
some pere ubu like landscape, a difficult listen at first but highly

records-€19.99 Califone-Roots and crown-The eight album from this chicago band known for
the blending of blues, folk music and electronic instruments, the album is
largely led by acoustic instruments inlcuding guitar, banjo and fiddle, but
alongisde this there is a carefully constructed electronics and found sound
loops, that might make the album sound quite avant garde, but the songs here
are strong enough to keep it together, there are moments of the likes of
henry flynts avant garde bluegrass banjo sounds and john faheys guitar
plucking blended with some of the dreamy sounds of the likes of the album
leaf, throw in a bit of eastern folk not too far from the recent beirut
album and some brass arrangements that wouldnt sound out of place on pet

the cherrystones rocks compilation, this one tends to concentrate on the
psychedelic folk rock and prog rock moog sounds, the album features a total
of 15 tracks ranging from the deviants in 1968 up the the dead moon from
1989, as the title suggest this new compilation concentrates on the edgy
psychedelic rock sounds but their common theme is a real feeling of heavy
funky basslines, the majority of artists i have to admit are very obscure
but one listen and you will be hooked to this highly entertaining mix,
features some fine liner notes so you can read up on the obscurities

tracks the entire band went into their brooklyn studios and completely
reworked all the tracks along with guests horace andy, kirsty rock, junior
jazz, sugar minott, toots, citizen cope, menny more, morgan heritage, tamar
kali, the meditations, frankie paul and israel vibration, the album also
features two bonus dub tracks, its the kind of thing radiohead fans will
either love or truly hate, there are some outstanding heavy dub moments on
it though, november 2006-Cd-Easy star records-€17.99 Estel-The bones of something-Estel have been hinting at some really great
things over the course of three previous albums but i have to say this new
album has taken a giant step for them, they have truly honed their
instrumental synth led sounds into something altogether original and highly
entertaining, they take in some elements of the modern post rock sounds,
some eighties keyboard led sounds and even some strange mutated version of a
b movie horror soundtrack, the end result is one of the finest irish records
of the year so far in my humble opinion and its always such a pleasure when
something comes along and leaves me at odds to even try and describe on
paper, there are lots of repetitive and explosive guitar led pieces slowly
mutating into catchy synth chord progressions, the legendary mike watt of
minutemen fame makes a sublime spoken word appearence on track four and
after that all i can do is highly recommend you at least have a listen to
this record as you will be very pleasantly surprised, the album is released

melodic sounds of echo and the bunnymen, the album is full of this kind of
infectiously catchy and very melodic guitar heavy underground rock sounds,
griffins voice is perfect for this sound with a superbly raw edge to it, the

noise i have heard in ages, its sounds like a snotty punk rock jesus and
mary chain playing fifties doo wop music and i have to say its a real blast
of fresh air to my ears, it sounds like it was recorded on the most beat up
mixing desk and then fed through a massive distortion effect, flip over to
the b side and they have moved in a doo wop fifties rockabilly outfit with
just as much fun, this band really sound like they are having great fun
making music, describing it on paper doesnt really do it justice as you

music from the last ten years, the music is much more sedate than the usual
mogwai stuff but then change is never a bad thing, the album is full of
mellow scratching guitars, lots of piano and a real intimate sound right
down to the inclusion of fingers scratching on guitar strings, everything
moves at a beautifully slow pace with the barest brushed drums to accompany
everything, november 2006-Cd-Pias-€15.99 Monotract-Xprmntl lvrs-New york based three piece originally hailing from

this is a really lovely collection of quite noisy psychedelic folk based
sounds veering off into some hybrid of syd barrett jamming with early velvet
underground, it all sounds really loose and improvised and you feel these
guys could record these songs hundreds of times and never do the same
version twice, its not quite as strange as it may sound on paper though as
the album is rather beautiful and mellow at times and is a hugely enjoyable
listen for all lovers of modern free folk, november 2006-Cd-Ecstatic
peace-€16.99 My morning jacket-Okonokos-21 track live album from my morning jacket, the
album was recorded live at the legendary filmore in san francisco, i have to
say i am not a big fan of live albums so a double live album kinda scared me
at first but it really does work for these guys, the first thing to blow me
away was how amazingly soulful jim james vocals are live, his voice sounds
truly stunning, the second thing to turn me on to this album was just how
explosive and noisy these guys can be live compared to their studio
recordings, the album is based in a warped rootsy american rock with layer
upon layer of heavy guitars floating around over a truly heavy rhythm
section, i have really grown to love this album as i had forgotten how
bloody good this band are, november 2006-Cd-Ato records-€19.99 Oxford collapse-Remember the night parties-This is real high quality old
fashioned indie rock with lots of trademark sounds that make the sub pop
label such an essential part of the underground rock scene over the years,
the ablum calls to mind the grunge pop sounds of the mighty superchunk with
little bits of the jangly guitar sounds of the wedding present and some
early flaming lips and built to spill, the album is just full of solid and
very clever underground rock sounds with some truly catchy hooks, comes
highly recommended for all lovers of the old sub pop sound, november
2006-Lp-Sub pop-€13.99 Rice, damien-Nine-The second album from damien rice finally sees the light
of day, the album was written, recorded and produced by damien and features
ten brand new tracks on his own irish based label heffa records, the
tracklisting for the album is nine crimes, the animals were gone, elephant,
rootless tree, dogs, coconut skins, me my yoke and i, grey room, accidental
babies and sleep dont weep, the album comes packaged in a lovely card
digipack which folds twice and is made from recycled paper, november 2006
this item will be shipped out to you on friday 3rd of
november-Cd-Heffa-€18.99 Roots tonic meets bill laswell-Roots tonic meets bill laswell-A new
collaboration between the legendary producer and bass player bill laswell
and matisyahus backing band, its not often that i get the use the words
modern dub reggae and very very good in the same sentence but i have to
admit i am loving this release at the moment, its full of modern digital dub
sounds blended with some really high quality old style live sounds with josh
werner on bass, aaron dugan on guitars and johan david on drums, laswell
truly knows his way around a quality dub reggae mix and his studio skills
are really in great form on this album, there are many moments on this album
when you really do think you are listening to some long lost classic dub
record from 20 years ago, the production is truly sublime and there is not
too much of the modern synth sounds to ruin it, the great lee perry would be
proud of this, november 2006-Lp-Roir-€13.99 Rose, ethan-Ceiling songs-Following a number of very limited releases on
locust this is ethan roses first full album, the songs are inspired by
textual sounds discovered in old things, rose combines player pianos, music
boxes, brass and strings with electronics to give us a collection of three
lovely drifting and evolving soundscapes, an extremely tranquil listen,
october 2006-Cd-Locust-€16.99 Sailboats are white-Turbo-Canadian based outfit now signed to alan mcgees
poptones label, this is far from the sounds you would expect from the
poptones label, the basis for this outfit are heavily rooted in the noisy
post punk and hardcore sounds of the eighties complete with their big black
style pounding drum machine, the closest thing i can think to describe this
outfit is to try and imagine big black merged with the early sounds of
snotty english punk rock and the new york dolls, its blisteringly fast stuff
and quite an original approach to merging all their influences, november
2006-Cd-Poptones-€16.99 Silver apples-The garden-The long lost third album from the silver apples
finally sees the light of day after years of legal wrangling over the
ownership of the tapes, this release has been an absolute labour of love
from bully records to release, 16 brand new tracks of silver apples magic,
for those of you who have never come across them silver apples were on of
the pioneers of using electronics in rock music, october
2006-Cd-Bully-€17.99 Siouxsie and the banshees-The complete john peel sessions-Nineteen track
collection featuring 5 complete peel sessions compiled on cd for the very
first time, the collection goes right back to the very first session in 1977
before the band even had a record deal just to prove peel loved these guys
before most people even knew who they were, features a really early version
of hong kong garden from the 1978 session too, the full tracklisting is love
in a void, mirage, metal postcard, suburban relapse, hong kong garden,
overground, carcass, helter skelter, placebo effect, playground twist, regal
zone, poppy day, halloween, voodoo dolly, but not them, into the light,
candyman, cannons and lands end, november 2006-Cd-Island-€10.99 Spencer dickinson-The man who lives for love-A collaboration between jon
spencer and north mississippi allstar members luther and cody dickinson, the
album is a real sleazy trip through some dirty low down mississippi blues
influeced sounds with heaps of slide guitars and low down hammond organ
sounds, its not quite as abrasive as the blues explosion but it sure makes
up for it with laid back bluesy sleaze, the album was recorded by the
legendary jim dickinson in his zebra ranch studios in memphis and you can
really hear the influence this had on the band, features a damn fine cover
of junior kimbroughs track free aswell, absolutely superb old style
mississippi blues rock, november 2006-Cd-Yep roc-€19.99 Spikes-In love no more-Dublin based rock outfit return with their 3 track
ep, features in love no more, croatian lover and in love no more enhanced
video, these lads have a great love for old style adrelelin driven classic
rock sounds with a real raw live feel to it, the opening track sounds like a
modern take on the rawkus sounds of early rolling stones with a real funky
edge to it, november 2006-Cds-Own label-€2.99 Tall firs-Tall firs-Tall firs are a new york based three piece now signed to
thurston moores ecstatic peace label, this is a lovely and rather mellow
collection of post rock meeting free folk and folk rock, there are moments
when the repetitive guitar phases remind me of the quiter parts of mogwai
which then slowly blends into something akin to a folky velvet underground,
the end result is something very very original and an album of very intimate
warm sounds, november 2006-Cd-Ecstatic peace-€16.99 Venetian snares-Hospitality-Six track mini album from aaron funk aka
venetian snares on the planet mu label, the king of gameboy techno meets
ultra fast breakcore throws in a bit of lush classical string samples just
to confuse us all for the first two minutes of this release, you think he
has gone off in a new direction until the heavily distorted and disjointed
beats kick in and then all gets back to normal, try to imagine aphex twin
playing come to daddy whilst suffering from some branch of attention deficit
disorder, yet again mr funk provides some of the most abstract electronic
non dancefloor sounds, november 2006-Lp-Planet mu-€14.99 Veruca salt-Iv-Album number four from veruca salt and their first full
length album in nearly six years, the band are now signed to the highly
respected label sympathy for the record industry, the ablum features 14
classic slices of grungey pop punk sounds, these guys have a great knack for
writing hard hitting abrasive rock sounds with killer catchy hooks, sounding
like a blend of early hole, l7 and lots of indie pop sounds, its all high
octane fun with a real pop heart at the centre, november 2006-Lp-Sympathy
for the record industry-€11.99 Yabby you-Deliver me from my enemies-Blood and fire are back with a damn
fine reissue of yabby yous superb album deliver me from my enemies from
1977, this new reissue now comes backed with an additional dub of the title
track along with four tracks that originally appeared on 12 inch singles in
1977 and 78, also featured are two previously unreleased dubplate mixes of
pick the beam by prince jammy, the original album was mixed at king tubbys
studio and features sly and robbie, clinton fearon, albert griffiths, ansel
collins, tommy mccook, bobby ellis and vin gordon, i simply cant get enough
of this soulful roots reggae sound at the moment, features a total of 17
tracks, november 2006-Cd-Blood and fire-€18.99 *************************************************************

fighters, the album is a really catchy collection featuring layers and
layers of guitars swirling behind feerick real knack of writing a perfect
underground pop song, october 2006-Cd-V2-€16.99 Boredoms-Seadrum-Originally released as a japanese only cd in 2005 on the
warners japan label, this album features two twenty minute epics from the
boredoms, seadrum open up with the mellow vocal only lament before launching
in the thunderous triple drum patterns and what follows is a superb almost
trance like piece of tribal jazz basically, house of sun is a much more
meditative affair with lots of droning traditional japanese instruments
slowly overlapping each other and layering over each other ending up with a
huge frenzied and totally trippy collection of stringed instruments, comes
in a blue jewel case with silver print, july 2006-Cd-Vice-€21.99 Brown, james-I got you i feel good-Originally released way back in 1966 on

a bunch of brazilian kids blending up old school punk funk ala esg and the
funky hip hop of the tom tom club, the main track is taken from their
excellent debut album cansei de ser sexy, spank rock dishes up a real disco
infused hip hop mix, diplo manages to turn the track into a real
floorfilling piece of chunky electro complete with eighties synth bass
sounds and is truly excellent, us import in plain white card sleeve,

electronic pop sounds with lots of live guitars, pianos and lush farfisa

Beirut-Gulag orkestar-Beirut is nineteen year old multi instrumentalist zach
condon from albuquerque, the album features guest appearences from neutral
milk hotels jeremy barnes and heather trost from a hawk and a hacksaw, the
album comes across as a collection of archival eastern european folk songs
with lots of mandolins, ukuleles and disjointed scratch brass sounds, condon
adds his beautifully dramatic deep baritone voice over these sounds to make
an album that sounds like a miniature trip around the world, a hugely
enjoyable new take on the current sounds of acid folk and an album that will
suck you in on first listen, highly recommended, now reissued on the 4ad
label and features the bonus cd ep lon gisland which wasnt on the original
ba da bing version, november 2006-Cd-4ad-€16.99 Mogwai-Zidane-It really was only a matter of time before some film maker has
the good sense to ask mogwai to score a soundtrack, what a marriage made in
heaven this is too, you have a film about one of the greatest footballers of
all time and one of the finest exponents of soundscape like instrumental
music from the last ten years, the music is much more sedate than the usual
mogwai stuff but then change is never a bad thing, the album is full of
mellow scratching guitars, lots of piano and a real intimate sound right
down to the inclusion of fingers scratching on guitar strings, everything
moves at a beautifully slow pace with the barest brushed drums to accompany
everything, november 2006-Cd-Pias-€15.99 Drever, kris-Black water-The debut album from this young scottish singer
songwriter on the reveal label, the album features guest appearences from
the likes of kate rusby, eddie reader, roddy womble, donald shaw, ewen
vernal, andy cutting and ian carr, scottish folk music has slowly been
making a comeback on the underground music scene with artists like king
creosote and james yorkston bringing more and more of it into their sound,
this new album from drever is probably the most rustic folk sound around at
the moment, the album features both traditional folk songs and new tracks
penned by drever, the album is full of scratchy fiddle sounds, accordians,
acoustic guitars and the most perfect raw scottish voice, there are also
little touches of old irish folk sounds too particularly with their use of
the fiddle, really really lovely raw folk music just as it should be,
