************************************************************* New In This Week - ( all prices in Euro ) New in stock items on sale at - http://www.roadrecs.com/stock/shopping.php3?start=1&action=1 ************************************************************* Airport girl-Slow light-Its taken five years since their debut album for airport girl to serve up a second helping of downbeat country tinged pop sounds on the fortuna pop label, this is some really lovely laid back music sounding like a cross between the likes of sophia, galaxy 500, the pastels and the go betweens, there are little country tinges to the album but its mostly just high quality acoustic based indie pop, january 2007-Cd-Fortuna pop-?15.99
Animal collective-People-Brand new single from the truly excellent and always bonkers animal collective, features three previously unreleased tracks from the same recording sessions as the feels album, features eyvind kang from mr bungle and sun city girls along with kristin anna valtysdottir from mum, the ep is finished off with a live version of people, the main track sounds like it could quite easily have been lifted from some rare syd barret session with a totally infectious almost surf like guitar riff throughout, if you open your mind up enough you will discover these guys are writing some of the most amazing psychedelic pop music around at the moment, like some truly warped blend of the beach boys and the flaming lips, also features tikwid and my favourite colours, january 2007-12"-Fat cat-?7.99
Arbouretum-Rites of uncovering-This is the second album from baltimore based arbouretum and their first for the thrill jockey label, the main sonwriter in the band dave heumann has played with papa m, anomoanan, bonnie prince billy and cass mccombs in the past, this new ablum is one of the finest collections of heavy guitar based folk rock i have had the pleasure to hear in quite some time, his influences would range from early neil young to will oldham and plenty more inbetween, heumann is not afraid to delve into the guitar solo sounds of early southern rock at times too, at times the album sounds like classic will oldham backed by neil youngs crazy horse band, its lo fi folk rock teeming with expolsive guitar solos, absolutely wonderful stuff, january 2007-Cd-Thrill jockey-?18.99
Beangrowers-Dance dance baby-Eleven track album from this new indie rock outfit from malta, sounding a bit at times like a slightly art rock take on the catchy sounds of stereolab meets early st etienne with the cures guitar player, they also have little elements of the edgy new wave sound with chunky heavy bass and jangly guitar lines slowly blasting out with heavy distorted choruses, sounding a wee bit like a female fronted interpol, january 2007-Cd-Series 8-?9.99
Benga-Newstep-Benga is deemed by many in the know to be one of the originators of the new dubstep sound from london, this 15 track collection of stunning instrumentals certainly shows that he is one of the finest in the genre, anybody that liked the recent burial or kode 9 albums will surely love this, its not quite as ambient as the burial album as the beats are a little heavier and hard hitting, basically its a superb blend of digital reggae, dub, hip hop and grime, whilst its a big melting pot of all the above it doesnt quite sound like any of them in particular, high quality chunky beats with lots of dubby sound effects and glitchy processing, dubstep at its highest quality, january 2007-Cd-Benga beats-?17.99
Black diamond heavies-Every damn time-The black diamond heavies are a raw rock n blues outfit from tennessee featuring john wesley myers on fender rhodes and van campbell on drums, the album features some lovely smooth old style blues tempered with some real sleazy bar room sounds, try to imagine the voice of tom waits with the black keys behind him, whilst it may sound strange on paper the use of a fender rhodes in the band instead of guitars actually works like a dream for this kind of bass heavy blues and gives drummer van campbell the freedom to roll around his drum kit at will, fine stuff indeed, january 2007-Cd-Alive-?19.99
Bloc party-The prayer part one-Features the prayer and also england on the flip side, the single comes housed in a gatefold sleeve with room to hold the second part of the series which is sold separately, the prayer is a real pulsating bass driven piece of eighties influenced indie rock complete with lush synth sounds,-7"-Wichita-?3.99

Bloody hollies-Who to trust who to kill who to love-The bloody hollies are a bluesy tinged garage punk outfit on alive records, this is some truly damn fine traditional bluesy rock n roll, at times these guys sound like the white stripes or the black keys meets early led zeppelin, the album is full of big chunky guitar riffs perfectly complemented by wesley doyles raw vocals, what i love most about this album is the fact that these guys dont try and mess around with a winning formula by being all arty and clever, they aint afraid to let the songs just rock out on their own in a totally loose style, january 2007-Cd-Alive-?19.99
Bonnie prince billy-Lay and love-The third single to be taken from the letting go album, the track features guest vocalist dawn mccarthy from faun fables who provides a real sweet sixties folk edge to the track, its probably one of the prettiest little folk tunes that oldham has even recorded, the flip side features a cover of the bob dylan track going to acapulco done in a wonderful new orleans jazz style, january 2007-7"-Domino-?3.99
Boredoms-Super roots five-Originally released in 1995 on the warners reprise label, the album features just one monstrous 64 minute long track and is pure heaven to lovers of pure psychedelic noise,-Cd-Very friendly-?19.99
Boredoms-Super roots one-This album was originally back in 1993 on the major label reprise records, the album features 14 short sharp blasts of boredoms mayhem clocking in at just under 20 minutes in total, i wiould simply love to have seen the faces on the men in suits behind the warners desks when they were presented with this piece of avant garde madness from one of japans finest, ranging from brass driven pure avant garde jazz rock to some short blasts of old school garage rock to syd barret like psychedelic madness, reissued on the very friendly label, january 2007-Cd-Very friendly-?9.99

Client-Zerox machine-Electro pop trio client return with the new single and a cover of the adam and the ants tune zerox machine, features simon tong from the gorillaz and the verve on guitars, this remix ep features mixes from n joi and idc, n joi turn the track is a real floor filling piece of eighties synth driven electro whilst the idc mix keeps the track on a more eighties synth pop vibe, january 2007-12"-Loser friendly-?7.50
Client-Zerox machine-Electro pop trio client return with the new single and a cover of the adam and the ants tune zerox machine, features simon from the gorillaz and the verve on guitars, the track has a real eighties pop feel to it strangely enough with lots of pulstating bass synths and heavy distorted keyboards, try to imagine a blend of the human league and the darker sounds of depeche mode, also features jonny slit atomizer mix on the flip side, limited edition white vinyl pressing, january 2007-7"-Loser friendly-?3.99

Deerhunter-Cryptograms-This is one of the most varied album you are ever likely to hear from the kranky label, its a big distance from the usual electronic and drone based sounds that kranky are famous for, there are still moments of layered guitar based droning sounds within this album but its much more of a full live band affair with lots of quirky off kilter indie rock thrown in, there is also lots of bass driven angular math rock sounding a bit like a more psychedelic girls against boys meets the gang of four, january 2007-Cd-Kranky-?17.99
Dexateens-Hardwire healing-Album number three from this alabama based southern rock outfit, anyone with the slightest interest in the sounds of early neil young, lynyrd skynyrd, drive by truckers and classic early southern rock will simply love this new album, the album is full of old style sleazy southern rock sounds with lots of country rock influences ala gram parsons etc, there is lots of smooth pedal steel guitar sounds and lots of good old fashioned guitar solo workouts thrown in too, when its this good there aint no reason to fear the rock, january 2007-Cd-Rosa records-?18.99

Hold steady-Boys and girls in america (with free hold steady comic)-Recent album of the week in the irish times and one of the picks of the cmj festival 2006, a real noisy rock affair that reminds me of the classic loose indie rock answer to early springsteen and the e street band, the album is full of euphoric guitar heavy blasts of old school rock complete with the pounding piano sounds, its great to hear a band not afraid to let loose and it really sounds like these guys have a great time doing what they do, january 2007 -Cd-Vagrant-?16.50

Jenssen, geir-Cho oyo 8210m-Geir jenssen is probably better known as electronic artist biosphere, comes in a very beautiful oversized card sleeve with paper booklet featuring notes and photos from cho oyo mountain, the booklet is pretty essential to any enjoyment of the album as it describes various parts of the journey and the sources of the field recordings, jenssen obviously decided to record under his own name this time as the album is a real departure from his lush ambient soundscapes and digital processing, the 12 tracks here are pretty much raw field recordings featuring running water, rainfall, winds, wind chimes, dogs barking, storms and various other sound effects, a captivating listen and truly outstanding packaging, january 2007-Cd-Ash international-?18.99

Parlane, rosy-Jessamine-The second album on the always impressive touch label from new zealander rosy parlane, parlane using droning scratchy processed guitars for his source material with the initial effect sounding like a cello slowed down beyond recognition, as the three long tracks slowly take shape parlane adds in some more organic field recordings of rainfall, dragonflies etc to give the effects of being lost somewhere in the middle of a swampy marsh, comparable at times to christian fennesz, the kranky label and even the mellow side of sunn o, the album can be quite haunting and unselltling at times with a real doom like feeling about the drones, yet another superb collection of digital noise from the touch label, january 2007-Cd-Touch-?17.99

Gaye, marvin-Trouble man-Soundtrack to the 1971 blaxpoitation film, soundtracks normally have one standout track with the rest filled by incidental pieces, but this is one the best soundtracks ever made, an enjoyable listen from start to finsih, filled with super funky grooves like on t plays it cool and the more soulful moments on trouble man, unfortunately the reissue doesn't come with the original fold down cover, but nonetheless the music is incredible, june 2006-Lp-Tamla-?12.99

Klumpes, adrian-Be still-Solo album from the pianist with triosk on the leaf label, on this project klumpes takes piano pieces and treats and distorts them electronically so that what may have been simple piano compostions are taken in a different lush and serene direction, there have been some damn fine electronic albums this year but this one really stands apart, certainly for fans of max richter, deaf center and goldmund, october 2006-Cd-Leaf label-?17.99
Kode 9 and the spaceape-Memories of the future-Kode 9 is a name that first came to my attention as the producer behind the truly awesome debut album from burial also released on the hyper dub label, if you are familiar wth the burial album then kode 9s studio mc spaceape will also sound familiar as the deep voiced vocalist on many of the burial tracks, kode 9s album delves much into the dubby reggae influenced side of things compared to burials ambient textures, the beats are like the slowest dub reggae imaginable interspersed with elements of underground hip hop and some very very laid back jungle beats, november 2006-Cd-Hyper dub-?18.99
Lightnin hopkins-An introduction to-This nicely priced introduction to the work of sam lightning hopkins provides a solid overview of the legendary bluesmans career, includes greatest hits, if you could call them that, such as trouble in mind and blues is my business alongside rarities like vietnam war blues and one of my all time favourites mr charlie with a truly wonderful spoken word intro from hopkins, features a total of 16 classic cuts from one of the most distinctive voices of blues music, every home should have at least one lightnin hopkins albums in it as far as im concerned, all tracks have been fully remastered for this release, october 2006-Cd-Fuel-?10.99
Lullabye arkestra-Ampgrave-A brand new outfit on the constellation label featuring justin small from do make say think on drums and katia taylor on bass, these two main members have a backup cast of 12 members including sax, organ, trumpet, bellows, violin and more, this is far from the usual kind of sound that we have become used to from the constellation label, this is some seriously noisy are quite abrasive pop rock meets sludgy almost metal edged post punk sounds, at first listen it sounds like the entire band have been fed through a distortion pedal but im guessing its the sheer volume of the band more than anything else, there are moments of old school riot girl sounds blended in with some very noisy folk tinged rock, its pure thrash rock at times with screeching saxophone solos and shouty vocals, brings me right back to the great days of labels like trance syndicate etc, pressed on heavyweight vinyl, november 2006-Lp-Constellation-?21.99
Mono-Walking cloud and deep red sky flag fluttered and the sun shined-Third album from tokyo band mono, released in 2004, 8 tracks of ambient textures and ecstatic guitar freakouts ranging from two and a half to over fifteen minutes in length, hard to pick out some standout tracks as it really is a superb listen from start to finish, recorded in chicago by steve albini, not quite as explosive as some of their other releases but still another stunning album from these guys, 2004-Cd-Temporary residence-?17.99
Musics of the soviet union-Various artists-Vinyl reissue of this wonderful collection of traditional music from the former soviet union on smithsonian folkways, the album was origingally recorded in 1988 during the smithsonian institution festival of american folklife held in washington, the sounds range from traditional accapella, childrens lullabies, solo bagpipes, tuvan throat singers, wedding dances, working field songs and laments, a fine introduction to music from many different regions of the former soviet union-Lp-Smithsonian folkways-?10.99
Newsom, joanna-The milk eyed mender-After touring with bonnie prince billy this has been an eagerly awaited album, very sixties sounding folk that crosses into bluegrass and the strange psyche folk of the likes of vashti bunyan etc, one of my folk albums of the year so far, strange and very beautiful sounding music for just one lady and her traditional harp, this really is like nothing you have ever heard before, ocotber 2004-Cd-Drag city-?17.99
Newsom, joanna-Ys-Finally the follow up to the milk eyed mender from 2004, the original recordings of newsom and her harp were made by steve albini with the legendary van dyke parks adding a whole host of orchestration and lush arrangements over the top of it all, the album consists of five long tracks and is the most ambitious thing she has approaced so far, the sounds from the first album are still around with newsoms original song compositions merely bulked up the van dyke parks truly grandiose arrangements, newsoms lyrics read like extended poems or short stories and she has really proven herself as one of the finest songwriters around at the moment, this is one of the most dramatically haunting albums i have heard and does bear some comparisons to the intricate arrangements of the likes of kate bush at times, its already one of my albums of the year, you will see the word opus many times when you read reviews of this album but this truly justifies it already, november 2006-Cd-Drag city-?20.99
Panda kopanda-The ocean of fire ep-This is the second release from this belfast based indie rock outfit and the follow up to the letting go ep from 2005, the ep features about my temper, ocean of fire, i know youre hurting, open ground and spiderwebs in empty rooms, along with that you also get a cd rom video track from about my temper, the guys blend up guitar heavy indie pop with elements of arty new wave, december 2006-Cds-Cable attack-?5.99
Reich, steve-Phases-A nonesuch retrospective, steve reich turns seventy this year and this is one beautiful five cd box set and a truly excellent introduction to some of his works, reichs music has been influencing everything from minimal electronica to post rock sounds for many years now and he is probably one of the most highly respected minimalist composers from the last fifty years, the box features music for 18 musicians from 1976, different trains from 1988, tehilim from 1981, eight lines from 1979, you are variations from 2004, new york counterpoint from 1985, cello counterpoint from 2003, electric counterpoint from 1987, triple quartet from 1999, come out from 1966, proverb from 1995, the desert music from 1984, music for mallet instruments from 1973 and drumming from 1971, the box also comes with a superbly detailed booklet with some lovely black and white photographs, october 2006-5cd-Nonesuch-?39.99
Revenge of blind joe death-The john fahey tribute album-Twenty track collection of covers and tributes to the music of the legendary john fahey, fahey is still hailed as one of the finest steel string guitar pickers of all time, the album ranges in sounds from the full band blues rock of canned fish to the pure solo acoustic work to the more experimental sounds of the likes of nels cline, elliott sharp and henry kaiser, i cant say its as good as the real thing but it is a high quality stand alone collection of some very hot guitar players working on some of the finest folk music of all time, released on john faheys former label takoma records, december 2006-Cd-Takoma-?19.99
Roach, max-Members dont git weary-Jazz drummer max roach recorded this album for the warners jazz label way back in 1968, also features gary bartz on sax, charles toliver on trumpet, jymie merritt on bass, stanley cowell on piano and guest vocalist andy bey, six track reissue featuring the origanal track listing and sleeve artwork on the atlantic label, features abstrutions, libra, effi, equipose, members dont git weary and absolutions-Lp-Wea-?13.99

Screaming jay hawkins with the fuzztones-Live-Live four track mini album from 1984 from the truly eccentric screamin jay hawkins with guest band the legendary fuzztones, the album features a version of lieber and stollers alligator wine, his truly awesome hit i put a spell on you, its that time again and constipation blues, 2006-Lp-Get back-?13.99
Seven up-Various artists-A collection of old seven inch rarities from the crippled dick hot wax label, gathered together from the english underground scene between 1978 and 1982 the album features some fine obscure punk, indie pop, new wave and obscure but highly enjoyable sounds, features tracks from mark beer, glaxo babies, contact, i jog and the tracksuits, gerry and the holograms, brian brain, they must be russians, moondogs, thomas leer, cult figures, monochrome set, henry badowski and weekend, you may have only heard of one or two of the artists but dont let that get in your way as this is a real gem of a collection, november 2006-Lp-Crippled dick hot wax-?16.99

Slint-Tweez-9 track album from 1989 featuring david pajo from papa m and brian mcmahon from the for carnation, a truly classic and highly influential album and probably one of the best albums of the era-Lp-Touch and go-?14.99
Slowdive-Pygmalion-A desolate but strikingly beautiful record, although still influenced by their earlier shoegazing work, their third album from slowdive featuring neil halstead and rachel goswell who went on to form mojave 3, the album is probably the most downbeat of all three released by the band and really starts to take in little bits of ambient americana along the way with quite a lot of the tracks stripped down to halstead and his echoing guitar, almost sounds like the shoegazing answer to talk talks spirit of eden, originally released by creation in 1995 and now reissued on the castle label, 2005-Cd-Castle-?17.50
Subtle-For hero for fool-The second studio album from the subtle crew on lex records, a veritable aniticon supergroup featuring doseone and jel who have featured in the past in themselves, clouddead along with the 13 and god project, this new improved outfit now features live drums, guitars and dax pierson on keyboards just to add spice to the now familiar underground hip hop sounds of the anticon label, the hip hop ethos is still hidden in there but this is a much heavier affair compared to a new white from 2004, disjointed and full of fun, october 2006-Cd-Lex records-?16.99
Terry, sonny and brownie mcghee-An introduction to-A really fine collection of early blues sounds from two of the finest artists around, the majority of tracks from this 17 track collection are culled from their sessions in los angeles in july 1960 and features guest appearences from big joe williams and lightnin hopkins, sonny terrys trademark whopping voice and harmonica are perfectly matched by brownies flawless guitar picking, these two guys really knew how to inject a joyous and fun feeling into their brand of blues, all tracks have now been remastered and the cd comes with extensive liner notes, 2006-Cd-Fuel-?19.50
Toral, rafael-Space-Much like the chris herbert album releases this week this album sounds like space, the album marks a radical departure from rafael toral after fifteen years or so of accomplished work on guitar and electronics, this album features 3 pieces almost entirely constructed from a modified pocket amplifier which was then manipulated and processed with added bits of trumpet and trombone, the title of the album really is apt here as the result is free flowing textual soundscapes that are full of engaging moments, novemer 2006-Cd-Staubgold-?18.99
Tucker, alexander-Furrowed brow-Alexander tucker used to be a member of post rock outfit unhome, this is his second solo collection of psychedelic droning folk sounds and his first for the atp label, the ablum is based in the old rustic sounds of traditional english folk music ala fairport convention etc, tucker takes the basic sounds of folk and feeds it through his many effects and recording devices to end up with one of the most modern takes on folk music i have heard in quite some time, the acoustic guitars are layered upon each other as banjo and tuckers vocals slowly come into the mix, you end up with a really mesmerizing mix of electronically enhanced sounds blended with traditional acoustic instruments, a truly original album, pressed on heavyweight vinyl, december 2006-Lp-Atp-?19.99
Tunguska and denovissimis-Split single-Two of dublin's heaviest underground bands team up to deliver 7 inches of terror, tunguska featuring ex and current members of easpa measa, mongolia and polish legends silence bring you two tracks of their dark, tense d beat influenced hardcore, on the flipside denovissimis lower the tone even further with a 6 minute journey through their psychosis inducing mixture of sludgey doom metal and bleak drug addled thrashing, comes in a sweet full colour cover and destined to be a landmark for the irish diy hardcore metal scene for years to come, first release for dublins new cesspool label in conjunction with the uks superfi records and corks rimbaud records, december 2006-7"-Cesspool records-?3.50
Velvet underground and nico-Andy warhol-Hard to believe this album was originally released way back in 1967, it still sounds so fresh 40 years later, the albums features some pure sixties pop sounds like sunday morning along with their trademark abrasive rock rumblings of tracks like im waiting for the man, this reissue on the original verve label comes in the original gatefold sleeve with the famous banana artwork by andy warhol, also features femme fatale, venus in furs, run run run, all tomorrows parties, heroin, there she goes again, ill be your mirror, the black angels death song and european son, still one of the most perfect rock albums of all time-Lp-Verve-?14.99
Waits, tom-Orphans brawlers bawlers and bastards paperback version-Triple cd collection from tom waits on the anti label, features a host of material that has never seen the light of day before, this is so much more than your average best of or anthology as waits goes right back into the vaults to unleash some real gems in this package, features over 30 newly recorded tracks, some fine covers of tracks by the likes of the ramones, terry edwards, charles bukowski, leadbelly, brecht, kurt weill and daniel johnson, there is pretty much everything in here but i have to say the raw rocking bluesy stuff is really hitting the spot for me at the moment, the package comes in a foldout gatefold sleeve and features a 24 page booklet, features exactly the same tracklisting as the limited hardback version which is now sold out, november 2006<br>please note this is the new softback cover version and not the limited hardback version which is now totally sold out-3cd-Anti-?32.99
Watson, doc and merle-Black mountain rag-This is basically a selection of tracks culled from watson three album for the flying fish label made in the early eighties, the ablum features tracks fro red rocking chair, watson country along with doc and merle watsons guitar album, its also a truly excellent introduction to the many varied styles from a man i personally consider to be one of the greatest acoustic guitar pickers of all time, doc can take on anything from blues, country, folk, bluegrass and even ragtime jazz as on his version of gershwins lady be good, its pure old style american music and you wont find a better more fluent guitar player around, really stunning stuff and its a real treat to have these songs back in print again, october 2006-Cd-Rounder-?18.99
Working for a nuclear free city-Working for a nuclear free city-The debut album from this manchester based outfit on the melodic label, these guys blend up some hard edged electronica with the bass heavy sounds of early spiritualized and even some of the funky bass riffs of the happy mondays, stone roses etc, the end result is an album that neither falls into the electonic or indie rock genre and is something altogether original, there are lots of elements of laptop electronica that the melodic label is famous for at this stage but the addition of the live instruments adds a whole new dimension to the sound, there are also elements of the layered guitar sounds of my bloody valentine thrown in too, a rather hypnotic listen, november 2006-Cd-Melodic-?15.99

Bloc party-The prayer part two-Features the prayer along with version 2 on the flip side, limited edition yellow vinyl pressing, the prayer is a real pulsating bass driven piece of eighties influenced indie rock complete with lush synth sounds,-7"-Wichita-?3.99
