Adjagas-adjagas-adjagas are a duo from lapland now signed to the ever label, to my untrained ears there appear to be two very distinct traditional sounds going on here, there appear to be rhythms comparable to the hypnotics sounds of traditional african blues along with the vocal styles of traditional innuit music, the resulting album is something that sounds like an african tinged take on tuvan throat singers blended with traditional eastern folk, none of this will really make sense unless you have a listen for yourself and i do highly recommende it, february 2007-cd-ever-€20.99
Apples in stereo-new magnetic wonder-the apples in stereo return after nearly five years of silence with a real uptempo pop gem on the yep roc label, the band now features bill doss on keyboards from olivia tremor control, the album is a real happy singalong summery sounding pop record with little hints of the indie rock of the likes of pavement, the beach boys sense of east coast pop, the tambourine led indie pop sounds of the dandy warhols and also that seventies tinged soft rock of the likes of phoenix, the album just bounces along with a real feeling of happiness about it and its pretty hard not to get sucked in, fans of the last few phoenix albums will love this, february 2007-cd-yep roc-€17.50
Besnard lakes-are the dark horse-this is a rather beautiful album which manages to be both very very haunting and uplifting at the same time, there are moments on the album where you could be listening to some strange collaboration between godspeed and the polyphonic spree with its rambling apocalyptic post rock blended with euphoric choral sounds, at other times the album has a vocal delivery sounding like the beach boys meets low with early syd barrett era pink floyd as backing band, its highly original stuff and i can only recommend you at least give it a listen, february 2007-cd-jag jaguwar-€15.99

Brown, findlay-separated by the sea-the debut album from this new mellow folky based singer songwriter on the peacefrog label, the album calls to mind the classic folk sounds of the late sixties and early seventies with elements of the likes of nick drake, tim buckley and even the odd hint of english folk like fairport convention, david mcwilliams etc, its a really lovely acoustic based records featuring browns rather beautiful guitar picking and his perfectly deep voice, there are comparisions to his labelmate jose gonzalez but this is a much more uptempo affair, superb stuff, february 2007-cd-peacefrog-€17.99
Clap your hands say yeah-some loud thunder-the second album from clap your hands say yeah and the follow up the the hugely enjoyable self titled first album, the album was produced by dave fridmann who has worked with the flaming lips quite a lot in the past, 11 track album on the wichita label, the first real notable thing about this album is fridmanns production on the album, there are plenty of his trademark big studio effects on the album not too far away from his last effort with the flaming lips with lots of explosive almost wall of noise effects going on, elsewhere the album takes off from where the first one left off, there are lots of quirky off kilter indie rock gems in here sounding somewhere between the violent femmes meets the pixies meets early talking heads, it definitely takes a few listens before this album make any real sense but its worth the effort, comes with a giant foldout poster, february 2007-lp-wichita-€17.99
Coleman, bill-ill tear my own walls down-bill coleman is a cork based songwriter and this here is his debut full length album having already released an ep back in 2003 on his own label, 11 track album on the bcm label, comes in a paper digi pack sleeve, some nice mellow singer songwriter sounds, february 2007-cd-bcm records-€18.99
Conn, bobby-king for a day-bobby conn returns with a new album for the thrill jockey label, the album kicks with an explosive piece of over the top mars volta like prog rock featuring dueling guitar riffs and all, things get back to a more familiar sound after this and sees conn expand his soulful sounds from earlier albums with something sounding like shuggie otis, beck and prince fed through some psychedelic soul funk filter, this is quite a varied album and will come as no surprise to long time fans who know what this man is capable of, bobby is one of the few people who can seamlessy go from soulful funk sounds to camp prog rock in the space of one track, february 2007-cd-thrill jockey-€16.50
Css-off the hook part one-off the hook is taken from the fantastic css debut album on the sub pop label, its propably one of their more guitar heavy tracks featuring a very funky bassline and sounding like some indie pop take on the tom tom club, features off the hook along with meeting paris hilton css suxxx version, february 2007-7"-sub pop-€3.99
Css-off the hook part two-off the hook is taken from the fantastic css debut album on the sub pop label, its propably one of their more guitar heavy tracks featuring a very funky bassline and sounding like some indie pop take on the tom tom club, features off the hook along with new track poney money honey, february 2007-7"-sub pop-€3.99
Deerhoof-friend opportunity-finally deerhoof are back with the follow up to the rather wonderful album the runners four, these guys have spent the last year on tour with both radiohead and the flaming lips and it obvious from just one listen how tight a unit they have become, the best way to approach any deerhoof album is to forget about normal song structures and rhythms because these guys have that rare ability to fit four or five into one three minute blast of blissful psychedelic math rock, there is a real air of fun about this album at times too with a real poppy sound to it, the album is packed with strange time sequences and stop start moments, these guys have a rare ability to go from cute n cuddly to explosive post rock in a matter of seconds, this is one of those rare gems that will totally blow your mind with all its strange and wonderful ways but deep down its just pure psychedelic indie pop music, the album comes with six album sized double sided prints inside the sleeve designed by the artist david shrigley, february 2007-lp-atp recordings-€17.99
Distance-my demons-brand new album on the planet mu label from this bromley based dubstep artist, this is some seriously heavy and also seriously good new dubstep from dj distance, unlike the more ambient based sounds of last years burial album distance goes for a much more heavy dub tinged sound on his take on the dubstep movement, the album is full of crunchy almost hip hop beats complimented with heavy dub reggae like bass riffs and looping samples including plenty of weird vocals touches and some lovely swirling guitar work, if this is what instrumental dubstep is supposed to sound like then i am totally converted to this now, double vinyl pressing, try to imagine some kind of dub reggae blend with totally slowed down drum n bass, february 2007-2lp-planet mu-€19.99
Do make say think-you youre a history rust-the fifth studio album from one of canadas finest avant rock outfits on the constellation label which is also the home to godspeed you black emperor, do make say think features justin small from lullabye arkestra and charles spearin from broken social scene, the cd comes in a lovely card foldout sleeve, these guys have been quietly making some of the finest post rock sounds for many years now and one listen to this album and you will hear why they are still on one of the leading lights on this scene, building on their post rock repetitive guitar based sounds they have now added some brass, strings and even banjo and mandolin into the mix, these guys create some of the most hypnotic looping live sounds around at the moment and its also good to see they are not afraid to just let things go every now and then as some tracks build up into a wonderful wall of noise, february 2007-cd-constellation-€18.99

Dollboy-casual nudism-brand new eleven track album from oliver cherer aka dollboy on the arable label, the album features some really lovely mellow laptop electronica blended with some hints of rustic pastoral folk, there is lots of glitchy but warm electronica mingling with live sounds of oboes, flutes glockenspiel, xylophones, bells, brass and chimes, think of some of folktronica sounds of the likes of four tet merging with seventies pastoral folk instrumentals and the odd moments of minimal composers like phillip glass, steve reich etc, really lovely stuff, february 2007-cd-arable-€18.99
Flannery, mick-evening train-the debut album from this irish born singer now residing in new york, its a rather fine debut too for a man who has only hit 21 years of age, the album is based around slightly traditional folk sounds with the added spice of a fine gravely voice not too far away from sounding like a cross between nick cave and tom waits, its a highly rewarding almost concept like album as it tells the story of two brothers and mick has managed to hold the whole album together with some highly polished songwriting and fine musicianship, there is not a bad song on this record, this album was originally released on his own label back in 2005, february 2007-cd-emi-€17.99
Fu manchu-we must obey-one of the last remaining original stoner rock outfits return for their tenth album to date, there aint much new to report which is a good thing when it comes to fu manchu because they are just fine doing exactly what they do, this is back to basics classic stoner rock full of thunderous guitar riffs and a constant flow of classic rock sounds, along with queens of the stoneage these guys are probably the finest exponents of this groove heavy form of rock, the band now features bob balch, scott hill, brad davis and scott reader, february 2007-cd-centruy media-€18.99
Gainsbourg, charlotte-5.55-the second album from the daughter of the legendary serge gainsbourg, featuring the songwriting and musical skills of french duo air and the production skills of nigel godrich who is famous for his work with radiohead, the album is a collection of seriously laid back lush french pop with lots of airs distinctive washes of lush synths and some truly beautiful string arrangements, gainsbourgs vocals kind of remind me of early kate bush coated in sweet honey, just one listen and you will see this lady is not just some novelty act riding on her fathers fame, she is definitely a force to be reckoned with and this is one hell of a beautiful album, the album was originally released on cd back in 2006, limited edition double vinyl pressing, 2007-2lp-because music-€22.99
Georgeson, noah-find shelter-guitarist with devendra banhart from time to time and also the producer behind the recent black swan album from bert jansch, an album of mellow laid back sounds calling to mind a blend of brendan perry from dead can dance, neil hannon from divine comedy and the magnetic fields, the album has a lovely sound quality to it with the acoustic and electric guitar picking subtly added to with lush strings and piano, february 2007-cd-plain records-€17.99

Helios-eingya-helios also records under the names goldmund and keith kenniff, helios uses live guitars, drums and piano along with washes of lush electronica, a collection of gentle floating sounds, glitchy laptop electronica, layers of swirling guitars, minimal piano tinkling and the rather interesting addition of live drums on certain tracks, its got moments of artists like four tet, boards of canada to tortoise, mogwai and even the durutti column, if you are a fan of labels like kranky, leaf or even morr music you will simply love this stuff, this album was originally released on cd in november 2006-lp-type-€18.99
Hidden hand-the resurrection of whiskey foote-features the legendary scott weinrich from place of skulls, saint vitus and spirit caravan along with evan tanner on drums and bruce falkinburg on bass, this is really classic southern lord material with a hypnotic blend of heavy bass driven sludge rock and some slightly faster groove heavy stoner rock, as you would expect there are comparisions to early sabbath, pentagram etc but wino also throws in quite a bit of more uptempo groove heavy sounds like some evil doom rock version of zeppelin, this is quite simply a really really solid old style stoner rock album, february 2007-cd-southern lord-€17.99
Knives ov resistance-prisca sapientia-limited edition pressing in foldout paper sleeve, only 500 copies available, knives ov resistance features spykidelic aka echo park and also demian castellanos from orichalc phase, the album sounds like something you would expect godspeed you black emperor to come out with if they were sent away to a lonely forest with only the bare essentials to record with, there are some of the free folk sounds of the likes of the no neck blues band etc but this sounds much more like a totally stripped bare piece of acoustic post rock to me, its quietly haunting with lots of hypnotic dark moments, the album comes in a lovely screenprinted brown paper foldout poster sleeve too, february 2007-cd-aurora borealis-€14.99
Kybosh, the-rubicon-this is the debut three track ep from this irish based young four piece outfit, the ep features rubicon, the flood and too little too late, and a damn fine ep it is too may i add, if you like you new wave indie rock sounds in the vein of the likes of interpol or even the strokes then this one is for you, the band have that heavy bass driven indie rock new wave sound with a slighly dark edge to it, there are lots of echoing guitars that wouldnt be out of place on an early cure or echo and the bunnymen album and a bass sound that any killing joke member will love, february 2007-cds-skankfish records-€3.99
Landed-times i despise-limited edition vinyl pressing on the load label from this providence based outfit, these guys have been together featuring lineup changes since the mid nineties and have released several albums on the vermiform label, this album was recorded live in pawtucket in august 2001, try to imagine the music of shellac, jesus lizard or even slint backed with the vocalist from napalm death and then all fed through the most evil distortion pedal, its full of explosive heavy post punk songwriting and topped off with a truly evil vocal delivery, if you like your noise rock in a lightning bolt style then this will be the one for you, february 2007-lp-load-€20.99

Perkins, elvis-ash wednesday-this album will be officially released on the xl label soon but we have managed to get our hands on the last few copies released by perkins himself on his own label, on first listen you can tell that perkins must have a great love of artist like bob dylan, fred neil and even tim buckley, one thing that really stands out for me on this album is the amazingly sparse production qualities when you can hear every string being hit and every brush across the drum kit, this is some really really beautiful sombre folk music, if you like your folky sounds somewhere between early bonnie prince billy and elliott smith you will simply adore this album, 11 track album in a card gatefold sleeve, february 2007-cd-no label-€16.50
Pink mountaintops-single life-pink mountain is basically a noisy rock side project from black mountain vocalist stephen mcbean, this new track sounds like some distorted meeting of early rolling stones and the jesus and mary chain, the track kicks in with a thunderous bass drum and guitar riff and blasts away for three minutes, featuring noisy distorted guitars, heavy moog sounds and pounding bass drum this is old style garage rock exactly as it should sound, features the much more laid back track my best friend on the flip side, february 2007-7"-jag jaguwar-€4.99

Rjd2-you never had it so good-this is far from what you might expect to be coming out under the name of rjd2, this is pure piano driven underground pop music at its best, the track kicks in with a punchy piano riff before the summery west coast style vocals take over, its almost like a blend of early badly drawn boy with the soulful sounds of cody chestnutt, this could be the soundtrack to the perfect summer, also features just when on the flip side, february 2007-7"-xl-€3.99
So cow-these truly are end times-this is the second release from solo artist so cow that we have had the pleasure to listen to in here, the first was released on the irish based rusted rail label and this new one is on the covert bear label, this guy is rapidly becomming one of my favourite underground irish artists already, imagine a blend of the loose indie rock sounds of pavement or sebadoh blended with the anti folk sounds of jeffrey lewis or even the moldy peaches, the album is full of beautifully ramshackle lo fi sounds created by just one man and a selection of noisy guitars and stripped down drum sounds, harking back to the classic days of jangly indie rock, wonderful stuff again, february 2007-cd-covert bear records-€11.99
Trans am-sex change-the math rock meets synth pop specialists are back on the thrill jockey label with a brand new eleven track album, the album opens up with classic trademark trans am sounds where lush eighties synth sounds meets clever post rock songwriting, these guys have all the good parts of hawkwind, jean michelle jarre, kraftwerk, can, neu and heavy instrumental post rock, they always seem to approach their music with a certain element of tongue in cheek too and therefore adding a slighly humourous edge to the chin stroking post rock genre, these guys can also rock in the best way possible when they let loose too, check out track ten shining path if you dont believe me, february 2007-cd-thrill jockey-€13.99
Vandervelde, david-the moonstation house band-brand new signing to the secretly canadian label, vandervelde has recorded one of those instantly catchy albums taking in bits of sixties psychedelic pop blended with a voice that falls somewhere between marc bolan and early bowie, try to imagine a blend of old style mellow country rock ala crosby stills and nash blended with the sixties pop sounds of the beach boys, a bit of syd barrett solo material and some of the off kilter electronic pop of the animal collective, a really really fine album, february 2007-cd-secretly canadian-€16.50

Zecharia, zadik-Kurdish melodies played on zorna-Zorna is a middle eastern instrument creating stange drone like effects kinda similar at times to a traditional bagpipes, this collection of material was originally on cassette way back in 1980, this new version on the wonderful bo weavil label and is limited to only 500 copies and comes in a printed paper sleeve, the music is split into two distinct styles according to the liner notes, the faster paced sounds are accompanied by the traditional dola drum and have a wonderful repetitive theme about them almost calling to mind a middle eastern version of irish traditional dance music, the slower pieces without the dola have a lovely mournful droning feel about them, an exceptional insight into a genre of music i knew absolutely nothing about until about an hour ago, december 2006-Cd-Bo weavil-€18.99
