Finding this record in a used record store was like finding your favorite sweater in the bottom of a long-unopened drawer in you spare bedroom. Even before the needle dropped in the groove, I had a warm feeling from this record and a feeling of tremendous anticipation remembering the jewel that each song on this album is.

This album sounds fresh to this day with crisp production values and outstanding session work by some of the best in the business. "Skunk" Baxter is well known for his work with many bands and his work on this album was worthy of the top billing he received on the personnel listing on the back cover--of course his name also comes first alphabetically, I suppose.

The pressing here is old but still sounds crisp and clean with little background noise after all these years. Shocking to me if this record received as much play as my now long-lost first copy! The production values of Becker and Fagen are legendary and deserved. Over the years they stepped up from this first record and put out records that consistently rate on the top lists of many audiophiles. This record, while not at that peak, is certainly a harbinger of things to come with the work done by all of the first-rate musicians gathered to pull this together.

As I was driving to scrounge the record shops in Atlanta, I heard an NPR piece on memory and music and the notion was expressed that we remember all the music we ever hear--it's just that our brain selectively inhibits some things over time. When this record hit the turntable, I fully believed that notion as I could easily remember and anticipate even small details in these songs in terms of percussion and even guitar fills that are relatively soft in the background.

I'm sure an audiophile pressing of this record would be mind blowing but this standard version is now going in my pile that I frequently turn to when I'm looking for something good. After, you can never hear "Dirty Work" too many times and getting the guitar licks from "Reelin' In They Years" stuck in your head ain't such a bad thing, huh?
