smith, a real treat from the kranky label who always try to do something a
bit different, november 2006-Cd-Kranky-€17.99 Bone box-Death of a prize fighter-Second album from this manchester outfit

around with only morrissey coming close to him anymore, november

fiery furnaces albums and you end up with something very weirdly wonderful
indeed, november 2006-2cd-859 recordings-€21.99 Herbert-100lbs-Reissue of this classic early herbert album with a host of

rather long slow building workouts with the shortest track clocking in at 19
minutes, the tracks featured were recorded in wfmu radio in jersey, instants
chaviers in paris, freedom from festival in minneapolis and finally at cube
cinema in bristol, the album is a collection of slow building free improv
jams with the opening sections quite reminiscent of the likes of the no neck

organs of admittance, enthralling and yet again highy original sounds from
jackie o, november 2006-2cd-Very friendly-€21.99 Jd king and the coachmen-American mercury-Free jazz meets psychedelic garage

rock sounds of the likes of us maple etc, november 2006-Cd-Ecstatic
peace-€16.99 Lithops-Mound magnet-This is the third solo album from mouse on mars member
jan st werner under his lithops moniker, the album is a collection of nine
rather obscure and off kilter electronic tracks composed by lithops between
2003 and 2006, the album has a real playful gameboy like feel to it almost
like listening to music composed for some manic electronic game, there are
elements of the chunky motorik beats of mouse on mars but jan does away with
the melodies and tends to concentrate more on beats as a form of music, the
result is an album very much based on rhythm rather than melody and dabbles
in a very mellow take on the the heavy duty breakcore beats of the likes of
venetian snares and even aphex twin, november 2006-Cd-Thrill jockey-€18.99 Lpx-Easy music for difficult ears-Lmx is an irish based electronic artist
leigh o gorman and he has previously released under the name lube project x,
this limited edition 3 track ep features some of the finest irish
electronica i have heard in quite a while and along with artists like the
last sound, chequerboard and robert christian is further proof that the
irish lads can easily keep up with some of the bigger electronic artists out
there on labels like warp, rephlex etc, the ep opens up with the truly
haunting sounds of wasps in a honey trap sounding like boards of canada
meets third eye foundation, the tracks manages to be both mellow and deeply
haunting at the same time, big chunky beats do battle with mellow tinkling
synth sounds and lush washes of ambient soundscapes, the beats become
heavier and more frantic on paper lanterns but are offset with some lovely
minimal piano keys, on the last track ledge o gorman takes us off on a mouse
on mars like trip complete with crunchy beats and heavy moog like bass keys,
absolutely excellent stuff and one that deserves your attention, november

november 2006-7"-Best before-€4.99 My morning jacket-Okonokos-21 track live album from my morning jacket, the
album was recorded live at the legendary filmore in san francisco, i have to
say i am not a big fan of live albums so a double live album kinda scared me
at first but it really does work for these guys, the first thing to blow me
away was how amazingly soulful jim james vocals are live, his voice sounds
truly stunning, the second thing to turn me on to this album was just how
explosive and noisy these guys can be live compared to their studio
recordings, the album is based in a warped rootsy american rock with layer
upon layer of heavy guitars floating around over a truly heavy rhythm
section, i have really grown to love this album as i had forgotten how
bloody good this band are, this limited four lp box set also comes with a
full side of bonus material featuring 3 extra tracks where to begin, sooner
and strangulation which are not on the cd version, november
2006-4lp-Badman-€35.99 Newsom, joanna-Ys-Finally the follow up to the milk eyed mender from 2004,
the original recordings of newsom and her harp were made by steve albini
with the legendary van dyke parks adding a whole host of orchestration and
lush arrangements over the top of it all, the album consists of five long
tracks and is the most ambitious thing she has approaced so far, the sounds
from the first album are still around with newsoms original song
compositions merely bulked up the van dyke parks truly grandiose
arrangements, newsoms lyrics read like extended poems or short stories and
she has really proven herself as one of the finest songwriters around at the
moment, this is one of the most dramatically haunting albums i have heard
and does bear some comparisons to the intricate arrangements of the likes of
kate bush at times, its already one of my albums of the year, you will see
the word opus many times when you read reviews of this album but this truly
justifies it already, limited double vinyl pressing in a lush gatefold
sleeve with lyric sheet, november 2006-2lp-Drag city-€22.50 Nitzsche, jack-Hard workin man volume two-A collection of 26 track from the

post punk and art rock noise influenced by the new york noise and no wave
scene in the eighties, features guest vocalists louie austen and norwegian

Boogaloo pow wow-Dancefloor rendezvous in young nuyorica-This is one hell of
a sleazy and damn fine collection of sixties sounds from the underground new
york dancefloors featuring some rather excellent strip club jazzy boogaloo
sounds, its really raw and is so full of energy that is near impossible not
to feel yourself moving to it in some way, by the time the seventies arrived
this stuff had slowed down and turned into what we call lounge music but to
hear it like this in its pure raw format will make you think again about
lounge music, sleazy vocals, howling trumpets and brass, jazzy guitar licks
and huge big band explosions, if you are having a party soon then this is
totally essential music to have on the stereo, features people like machito,

in some very very heavy drone rock along some truly beautiful moments of
slide guitar led psyche folk, throw in a wee bit of old style krautrock
experimentalism and you have one hell of a fine record, september

the way from exotic sheffield, hawley has definitely found his true sound on

features on the 12 inch version and is a maurice fulton dub version and not
actually sexual healing, october 2006-7"-Emi-€1.99 Hot chip-The warning-Its been two years since their debut album mexico on

magic numbers, the group singing of the polyphonic spree and the recent
summery sounds of peter bjorn and john, the album has a real happy uplifting
sound to it with big group choruses and plenty of good time hand clapping,
all the songs and lyrics are written by emanuel lundgren but this really is
one big group effort almost like a gigantic version of the mamas and papas,
september 2006-Cd-Interpop-€16.99 Jape-The monkeys in the zoo have more fun than me-The second solo album from
richie egan who is also the bass player in the redneck manifesto, a
collection of dreamy electronic pop songs, september 2004-Cd-Trust me im a
thief-€10.50 Kk null-Kosmista noisea-Kk null was once the guitarist with japanese noise
outfit zeni geva, the album features two rather long live recordings from
kazuyuki kishino and is released on important records with artwork from sunn
o member stephen o malley, the album is a collection of live electronic
improvised sets opening with some rather abrasive glitchy beats over which
he layers moog sound effects, static noise and pure white noise not too far
away from the sounds of the great merzbow at times, unlike merzbow though kk
nulls sounds have constant beats behind them, sounds a bit like the end of
an orb live show with merzbow at the mixing desk, october 2006-Cd-Important
records-€16.99 Lcd soundsystem-Daft punk is playing at my house-Limited 12 inch pressing of
the new single taken from the debut album, features album version and
soulwax shibuya mix, february 2005-12"-Dfa-€4.99 Lcd soundsystem-Tribulations-Limited 3 track ep featuring tribulations album
version, tigas out of the trace closet mix and lindstom mix, september
2005-12"-Dfa-€4.99 Mars volta-Amputechture-The third studio album from mars volta and the
follow up to the totally prog rock sounds of frances the mute, features
guest appearance from john frusciante on pretty much every track, the album
pretty much takes off from where frances the mute left off, its more
mindbending seventies tinged prog rock with guitar solos and psychedelic
breakdowns all over the place, throw in some damn fine brass and plenty of
hammond organ, these guys are so good at this now that they make the likes
of deep purple sound lame, september 2006-Cd-Universal records-€18.99 Mikaelas fiend-We can drive anything-Mikaelas fiend are a drum and guitar
two piece on the saf label and this is one hell of a noisy piece of avant
garde rock action, its got little bits of early sonic youth, don caballero,
shellac and lightning bolt, they dont particularly sound like any of these
bands as this is one of the most ferociously original records i have heard
in ages, the pounding drums come on at 100 miles an hour and randomly veer
off into pulsating freeform jazz at times whilst the heavily distorted
guitar buzzsaws away like some devilsh white noise at times, none of the
songs have names and they really dont need them as the ablum should be taken
in as one entire 40 minute piece, this is one of the most original pieces of
avant garde noise i have heard in ages and if you are partial to a bit of
lightning bolt then you really really need this in your collection,
september 2006-Cd-Saf records-€17.50 Newsom, joanna-Ys-Finally the follow up to the milk eyed mender from 2004,
the original recordings of newsom and her harp were made by steve albini
with the legendary van dyke parks adding a whole host of orchestration and
lush arrangements over the top of it all, the album consists of five long
tracks and is the most ambitious thing she has approaced so far, the sounds
from the first album are still around with newsoms original song
compositions merely bulked up the van dyke parks truly grandiose
arrangements, newsoms lyrics read like extended poems or short stories and
she has really proven herself as one of the finest songwriters around at the
moment, this is one of the most dramatically haunting albums i have heard
and does bear some comparisons to the intricate arrangements of the likes of
kate bush at times, its already one of my albums of the year, you will see
the word opus many times when you read reviews of this album but this truly
justifies it already, november 2006-Cd-Drag city-€20.99 North sea and rameses 3-Night of the ankou-London drone outfit rameses 3
teams up with brad rose aka the north sea on this release on the type label,
a collection of weird psyce folk drones featuring viola, bouzouki, prayer
bells and other odd sounding chimes and scratches, what you end up with is a
truly blissful sounding collection of rustic desert soundscapes which calls
to mind a kind of acid tinged and warped dirty 3 meets stars of the lid, a
truly beautiful piece of music featuring two 18 minute long tracks along
with an exclusive remix from xela, august 2006-Cd-Type-€18.99 Redneck manifesto-I am brazil-Album number 3 from one of dublins finest
instrumental alt rock outfits, 11 track album on the new trust me im a thief
label, september 2004-Cd-Trust me im a thief-€13.99 Reich, steve-Phases-A nonesuch retrospective, steve reich turns seventy this
year and this is one beautiful five cd box set and a truly excellent
introduction to some of his works, reichs music has been influencing
everything from minimal electronica to post rock sounds for many years now
and he is probably one of the most highly respected minimalist composers
from the last fifty years, the box features music for 18 musicians from
1976, different trains from 1988, tehilim from 1981, eight lines from 1979,
you are variations from 2004, new york counterpoint from 1985, cello
counterpoint from 2003, electric counterpoint from 1987, triple quartet from
1999, come out from 1966, proverb from 1995, the desert music from 1984,
music for mallet instruments from 1973 and drumming from 1971, the box also
comes with a superbly detailed booklet with some lovely black and white
photographs, october 2006-5cd-Nonesuch-€39.99 Shit robot-Wrong galaxy-A collaboration between marcus lambkin and james
murphy from the dfa, features wrong galaxy and triumph on the flip side,
both tracks were produced by dfa, a mellow dubby affair with a big fat
chunky electronic bass line, the b side ups the tempo considerably with its
distinctive dfa punk funk sounds, april 2006-12"-Dfa-€4.50 Si schroeder-Coping mechanisms-The debut album from si schroeder who also
was a member of schroeders cat and schroeder sound, features nine tracks of
true beauty and is one of the finest irish records to be released this year
so far, the album is a seamless blend of mellow lush electronic sounds and
sound effects mixed with live guitars, human voices and live drums, if you
like schneider tm, postal service etc then you will simply fall head over
hells for this collection, hats off to mr schroeder for doing something very
new and inventive with laid back electronica, really really superb stuff,

november 2005-12"-Emi-€4.99 Sigur ros-Saeglopur-Limited edtion 12 inch pressing of saeglopur taken from
the album takk, a moving and haunting piece of music with clever use of
subtle electronic effects, layers of processed guitars and that distinctive

july 2006-12"-Emi-€4.99 Sigur ros-Saeglopur-Limited edition cd single and dvd double pack, features
saeglopur from the album takk along with three new tracks refur, o fridur
and kafari, the dvd feutures the videos for saeglopur, glosoli and
hoppipolla which is one of my particular favourites as it features lots of
old people fighting and generally acting the maggot, comes in a lovely
cardboard foldout digi pack, august 2006-2cd-Emi-€8.99 Stevens, sufjan-A sun came-New version of his debut album from 1999,
features 2 new tracks not on the original version, now features a total of
21 tracks, the album has now been fully remastered, the album was originally
recorded on stevens four track studio, this is probably sufjans most folk
based record so far with lots of middle eastern influences including flutes,
sitar and strange percussive sounds, a very very mellow mostly acousitic
based album compared to his later releases, at times quite similar to the
early sounds of elliott smith, the album was remastered and reissued in 2004
and has now been reissued at a new budget price-Cd-Ashthmatic kitty-€16.99 Yo la tengo-Mr tough-A big clunky piano and brass number from the new i am
not afraid of you and i will beat your ass album, the b side is a cover of
